Christopher Collins, MD

Dr. Collins is an assistant professor of Medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center and the Program Director for the fellowship program for the Division of Rheumatology at Washington Hospital Center. In addition to his academic clinical practices, he staffs the lupus clinic. His primary areas of expertise are in lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and connective tissue disease, and he is actively engaged in clinical research, including studies in various rheumatic diseases as well as medical education.

Training, Education and Research
Prior to joining Washington Hospital Center in early 2007, Dr. Collins was a senior research fellow at the National Institute for Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he performed clinical investigations in lupus. Dr. Collins completed his postgraduate training in internal medicine at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, Calif., in 2003 and his clinical rheumatology training at the same hospital in 2005. He has an MD from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and a BA from Hendrix College, Arkansas.

Honors, Awards and Society Memberships
Dr. Collins has been awarded multiple honors at the local and national level in recognition of his research and educational endeavors. In 2009, he was awarded the Clinician Scholar Educator Award from the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), which has allowed him to expand his research interests into innovative methods in medical education. In addition, Dr. Collins was the recipient of the ACR Distinguished Fellow Award in 2005, which was awarded to only ten rheumatology fellows in the country in recognition of their contributions to medical research, patient care and education. Dr. Collins is a fellow of the American College of Rheumatology and a member of several medical societies, including the American College of Physicians, American Medical Association and the Lupus Foundation of America. Also, he is a member on the Medical and Scientific Advisory Council for the Lupus Foundation of Greater Washington (LFAGW) as well as the MedStar Institutional Review Board.
