Florina Constantinescu, MD, PhD

Dr. Constantinescu is assistant professor of Medicine, Georgetown University Medical Center, and joined the Division of Rheumatology in August, 2008 as a full-time faculty member and rheumatology attending. Prior to joining Washington Hospital Center, she was a full-time faculty physician and assistant professor of Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Constantinescu is currently director of rheumatology resident education, which involves organizing the resident rheumatology electives, the curriculum as well as providing mentorship for the residents with an interest in rheumatology. She is also involved in clinical research for rheumatic diseases, with her field of interest being medical decision making. During the arthritis clinic, Dr. Constantinescu teaches residents and fellows general rheumatology.

Training, Education and Research
Dr. Constantinescu graduated from the Carol Davila University of Medicine, Bucharest, Romania. She also studied at the University of Medicine Claude Bernard in Lyon, France. Dr. Constantinescu continued her studies in Germany, where she conducted research in nuclear medicine and earned a PhD, focused on medical applications using single photon imaging systems.

Dr. Constantinescu completed an internal medicine residency at Norwalk Hospital, associated with Yale University, followed by a rheumatology fellowship at Washington Hospital Center / Georgetown University Hospital. She is currently working on a master of science degree in clinical research.

Dr. Constantinescu's clinical expertise, research focus on treatment preferences, broad cultural experience and fluency in five languages are welcome additions to our rheumatology program at Washington Hospital Center.

Honors, Awards and Society Memberships
During her residency, Dr. Constantinescu received the Outstanding Resident Award and Outstanding Graduate Award, as well as published her first research article. She is a fellow member of the American College of Rheumatology and a member of the American College of Physicians. She is a certified clinical bone densitometrist by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD). Dr. Constantinescu was chosen in 2008 as a Bone and Joint Decade young medical investigator, and was invited to attend the American College of Rheumatology Research Workshop.
