The Family Medicine department uses its own inpatient service at
the Family Health
Center at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. It is
staffed by our residents and faculty attendings and maintains a
daily census of 8-12 patients. The inpatient team is variable,
but is usually comprised of one upper-level resident and one or
two interns. Five family medicine faculty cover the inpatient
service, which allows residents to be exposed to variations in
practice style and medical management.
We utilize a Night Float system, which means residents on the
inpatient service do not take night call during the week. Interns
gain invaluable experience in managing medically complex patients
as well as invasive procedures such as intubation and central
lines after their rotation through the ICU.
Residents are also taught by emergency medicine certified
attendings during their 6-week rotation in the Emergency
The Adult Inpatient Medicine curriculum is coordinated by
Dr. Joyce King.
