Harsha Bhagtani, MD

Harsha Bhagtani, MD, received her Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from University of Pennsylvania in 1994, and her medical degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1998. She was trained in pediatrics at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and AI DuPont Hospital for Children and subsequently became a board certified pediatrician and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

In 2001, Dr. Bhagtani joined the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. Currently, she is the Clinical Director of the Reach Out and Read program and the Fit Families Pediatric Weight Management Program at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. In her role as Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Maryland, she serves as the director of the pediatric medical student clerkship at FSH.

In addition to seeing her own patients, Dr. Bhagtani has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to medical education. She supervises and teaches family medicine residents and manages the family medicine residency outpatient and nursery pediatric curriculum. She has received numerous teaching and service awards throughout her career. In January 2007, she was recognized as the Pillar Physician of the Quarter at FSH. She was also a finalist for the Maryland Daily Record's Health Care Heroes, Physician category in March 2008.

Dr. Bhagtani's research interests include asthma education, pediatric obesity and injury prevention. She is an active member of the community outreach committee at MedStar Franklin Square. She is also interested in early childhood literacy and coordinates and educates health care providers regarding the Reach out and Read Program at MedStar Franklin Square. She is a trainer for the Reach out and Read National Center. In this capacity, she helps other communities to access this literacy program. Dr. Bhagtani coordinates MedStar Franklin Square's yearly Asthma Fair, which strives to educate the community and empower families to proactively manage reactive airway disease in order to prevent asthma exacerbations. In addition, Dr. Bhagtani is a member of the Pediatric Asthma Group. This group's goal is to standardize the care and education of children with asthma in both inpatient and outpatient settings. As the clinical director of the Fit Families Program, Dr. Bhagtani organizes the pediatric weight management program. This program utilizes a family-based approach, which focuses on motivating healthy nutrition and physical fitness for the entire family. Dr. Bhagtani firmly believes that the lives of children can be improved by physicians getting involved in their patients' communities.
