Applicant Information - General Surgery at MedStar Georgetown

MedStar Georgetown sponsors a residency program in Categorical General Surgery training:

Note: All qualified applicants are considered for interviews. However, the volume of applicants precludes us from offering interviews to all qualified candidates who apply.

Candidates for the General Surgery Training Program must apply through ERAS, the Electronic Residency Application Service. We require the following documents:

  • ERAS common application form
  • USMLE Step 1 transcript (and Step 2 when available)
  • Medical school transcript
  • Personal Statement
  • Dean's Letter
  • 3 letters of recommendation

P.O. Box 13467
Philadelphia, PA 19101-3467, USA

Facsimile: 215-387-9963

  • VISA POLICY: J1 visas are sponsored through MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
  • The deadline for all ERAS application submissions for the 2014–2015 academic year will be November 1, 2013

Candidates who have been selected to interview will be notified via email correspondence. All candidates are interviewed in person during the months of November, December and January. During the interview day, each candidate will have the opportunity to interview with members of the faculty as well as the Chairman and Program Director.

The interview day provides not only an opportunity for our faculty to meet the applicants, but also provides a venue for applicants to gain information about our program. We, therefore, provide opportunities throughout the interview day for the applicants to speak to current residents and view our facilities in a tour.

The night before each interview, we host a Meet the Residents event at a local restaurant. Attendance is not mandatory, but it offers a great opportunity to meet the residents in an informal setting.

Please be aware, all correspondence will be done through email. The ERAS application system makes communicating easy. With email, we can send a message immediately, instead of waiting for a response within a few days.  Therefore, you will not receive a written letter through US mail when invited for an interview. We send invitations via email and then save them for reference and verification. This keeps our ability to track responses and sent items more efficiently.
