Conference Schedule and Educational Programs - Neurosurgery at MedStar Georgetown

Thursday mornings are set aside for grand rounds and teaching conference.

Neurology and Neurosurgery Grand Rounds

This weekly conference joins together the departments of Neurosurgery and Neurology. Guest speakers from around the country are invited to discuss current topics in the field.

Neurovascular Conference

This monthly conference is a joint meeting with members of the department of interventional neuroradiology and the neurology stroke team. Participants discuss interesting patient cases, and multi-modality treatment of stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, arteriovenous malformations, and aneurysms.

Neuroradiology Conference

This monthly conference is moderated by members of the neuroradiology service. Interesting cases from the preceding month are presented along with the relevant neurodiagnostic images.

Professor's Rounds

The neurosurgery faculty presents cases to the residents in this monthly conference. After listening to the history, the residents are asked to discuss the diagnosis and surgical management appropriate to the case.

Resident Presentations

Each academic year, every resident is asked to review and present a lecture on a neurosurgical topic. The choice of topic is made by the resident with the help of the program director, and is appropriate to the resident's level of training. The presentation is expected to have the level of sophistication worthy of future publication.

Journal Club

Each month, several articles in the current literature are presented at this meeting. Articles are chosen from a wide variety of major journals in fields relevant to the practice of neurosurgery, such as neuroscience, neurology and critical care, to name a few.

Hospital Case Conference

During this bi-weekly conference, instructive cases from the recent past are presented by the residents and faculty members involved. Along with the chosen diagnostic and management strategies, alternative treatments are put forth for debate and discussion.

Anatomy & Approaches

The emphasis of this meeting is nuances of intracranial and spinal anatomy. For the complex intracranial anatomy, the relevant approaches, including skull base techniques, are discussed. For complex spinal anatomy, important aspects of instrumentation techniques are presented.

Neuro-Oncology Brain Tumor Conference

Unlike the conferences above, this is a "working conference" and takes place on Friday afternoons. Experts in neuro-oncology from the departments of pathology, radiation medicine, radiology, neurosurgery, as well as the Lombardi Cancer Center, gather bi-weekly to discuss on-going treatment plans for complex patients.

CyberKnife Conference

This is another working-conference, which takes place every Friday afternoon. Members of the CyberKnife team discuss treatment plans for patients undergoing stereotactic radiosurgery.

Visiting professors:

Although we have a sizeable department with faculty members covering every aspect of neurosurgery, often we still want to supplement our teaching with new perspective from outside. Therefore, we routinely invite "the neurosurgical luminaries" to visit us and teach our resident. In recent years, our highly-respected visitors have included Drs. Robert Grossman, Harry van Loveren and Franco DeMonte.
