Letter from the Program Director - OB GYN at MedStar Franklin Square

MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center has a long tradition of training obstetricians and gynecologists. Originally certified in 1947, the residency program is fully accredited and incorporates both the ACGME core competencies and the letter and spirit of the ACGME duty hour requirements. The residency program has never been on probation.

MedStar Franklin Square serves a diverse community in eastern Baltimore County. This modern community hospital is located in a suburban setting, yet it has the third highest number of admissions and the busiest Emergency Department in the State of Maryland. Our 7-story Patient Tower, completed in July 2010, added a new Intensive Care Unit, an expanded Emergency Department, and five new floors with private patient rooms. The Women's Pavilion (built in 1998) houses virtually all of our department's obstetrical clinical activities, where we deliver more than 2,800 babies each year. One third of these patients are primarily cared for by the resident service.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology includes a busy group of private practitioners, a dedicated cadre of part-time and full-time faculty members, and sub-specialists in gynecologic oncology, reproductive endocrinology, maternal fetal medicine and urogynecology.

Although most graduates of the residency program ultimately choose to enter private practice, graduates of our program have completed post-graduate fellowships in fields such as gynecologic oncology, endoscopic surgery, pediatric gynecology, and maternal fetal medicine.

As a resident in OB/GYN, you are not just entering a program; you are becoming a member of our extended family. With three residents per year and no fellowship programs, our residency avoids the rigid hierarchy present in some larger programs, and encourages formal and informal interaction with our departmental physicians, who range from recent graduates to seasoned veterans. Our mentor program encourages both professional and personal development to guide future career choices and practice decisions.

If you are interested in a fully accredited four-year program that offers individual attention to personal and professional growth and provides excellent clinical training in a modern facility with an academic program proven to graduate competent practitioners, please consider applying to MedStar Franklin Square. Sincerely,

Donovan Dietrick, MD, FACOG
