Residents - OB GYN at MedStar Franklin Square

Caitlin Clifford, DO

Birthplace:Morganton, North Carolina
Undergraduate:Wofford College
Medical School:Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine
Personal Statement: When looking for a residency program I wanted to find a place that had a wide range of pathology with a large patient volume, was just as strong in gynecologic surgery as it was in obstetrics, had good didactics, and most importantly had committed faculty and residents to make a supportive learning environment. Franklin square has been all of these things and more. Everyone here is completely invested in my education from Dr. Dietrick, the program director, to the faculty and private attendings, to all of the upper level residents. It is rare to find such a strong residency program with so many caring people and I feel very luck to be a part of it.

Jessica Detrick, DO

Birthplace: Uniontown, Pennsylvania
Undergraduate: West Virginia Wesleyan College, Buckhannon, West Virginia
Medical School: West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine, Lewisburg, West Virginia
Personal Statement: A residency in obstetrics and gynecology offers a unique combination of primary care and a surgical specialty which I believe compliments my personality, my devotion to medicine, and my surgical abilities. I am confident that my strong work ethic and compassion as well as being a female myself will provide an excellent foundation for my future in this field. I am excited for the future, for my career, to make a difference! My long-term goal is to practice general obstetrics and gynecology. I would also like to pursue a position as an attending at a teaching hospital. In the past, I have been mentored by a superb group of physicians who are indispensable. I hope that I have a similar opportunity to teach and share my knowledge, experiences and my love for obstetrics and gynecology with the next generation.
Why I like MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center: MedStar Franklin Square Ob/Gyn residency program is more than I ever anticipated. Everyone is friendly and dedicated to resident education. Everyone here has a role in your success as a physician and they take it personally. I feel that I could not get a better surgical experience anywhere else and the specialists who we have the opportunity to learn from are amazing, patient, and love to teach. I am honored to be a part of MedStar Franklin Square.

Gwendoline Fang, MD

Birthplace: Cameroon, West Africa
Undergraduate: University of Lagos, Lagos, Nigeria
Medical School: Ross University School of Medicine, Portsmouth, Dominica
Personal Statement: As a young girl growing up in a malaria-infested geographical area, I often was the child who took daily medication to ill family members; whenever there was a recovery recorded I was delighted as I felt that I had been solely responsible for that. That was the birthing of my MD dreams. My personal experience with very high infant and maternal mortality rates in my home country molded my Ob/Gyn interest.

As I grew up and went through life, my experiences were rich and no matter what I did, the thought lingered until I could bear it no more. The opportunity presented itself and I was able to take advantage of it and the rest was history.
Why I like MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center: Here I am today at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center; a testament to my life. All I can say is that it was meant to be. I have and continue to enjoy my experience here. Just like any aspect of life, there are good and bad days BUT overall for me, everyday in Ob/Gyn at MedStar Franklin Square is a reminder of my passion for this profession. I love MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, Ob/Gyn Department for its warmth and nurturing nature. I have learned a lot and have seen myself grow the last couple of years both professionally (especially) and personally too. I am grateful.

Kristin Gattuso, DO

Birthplace: Towson, Maryland
Undergraduate: Towson University
Medical School: Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine
Personal Statement: Once I completed my 3rd year Ob/Gyn rotation in medical school, I knew exactly that Ob/Gyn was what I was meant to do. For me personally, it is the best of both worlds. I love the mixture of primary care with surgery. Also, there is nothing more satisfying than delivering a baby to excited parents who have been waiting anxiously for nine months.
Why I like MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center: I am very happy with my decision to come to MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. The combination of excellent teaching from our attendings and the high volume of patients have resulted in a very good residency experience. Our group of residents is like a large family. We give each other encouragement and support on a daily basis. Upon completion of my four years at MedStar Franklin Square, I plan to be involved with the Ob/Gyn Residency Program.

Kelli Gevas, MD

Birthplace: Canton, Ohio
Undergraduate: Wright State University
Medical School: University of Medicine and Health Sciences, St, Kitts
Personal Statement: Working and caring for people is where I derive the most happiness and satisfaction. It is that enjoyment and commitment to people that drove me to attend medical school. This is also one of the reasons Obstetrics and Gynecology is so pleasurable for me; being able to care for and interact with different women everyday and make a difference in their lives. I feel so blessed to have this opportunity!
Why I like MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center: I knew MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center would be a great place for residency as soon as I interviewed here. I especially appreciate the supportive and caring residents and faculty who challenge me to practice medicine with excellence. The academically stimulating environment challenges me to learn something new every day and I am so thankful to have this opportunity to learn from such a great group of physicians.

Ambareen Jan, MD

Birthplace: Springfield, OH
Medical School: Ross University School of Medicine
Personal Statement: As a child, I remember stories of my grandfather, an Internist in Pakistan, who would visit remote villages to deliver home-made remedies and educate the poor about their health. I imagined myself as such a healer one day. In my youth I would visit my father, a Cardiologist, at his offices in our rural Ohio community where he would deliver state-of-the art care to patients who would otherwise have to travel many miles away. I knew from early on that I wanted to follow in my father and grandfather's footsteps and serve humanity in their tradition.
Why I like MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center: The teaching faculty go above and beyond to assure the residents are growing as physicians. They are supportive and easily approachable.

Samar Merriman, MD

Birthplace: Washington, DC
Undergraduate: The Catholic University of America
Medical School: St. George's University
Personal Statement: I sought out clinical experience prior to applying to medical school. I obtained employment as a Medical Assistant in a thriving urban obstetrics and gynecology practice, where I worked with accomplished medical providers, physicians, nurses, and physician assistants. I remember following my first patient from her very first OB visit to the day of her delivery and realizing this is what I wanted to do with my life. Seeing patients on a regular basis for prenatal care and getting to know them and their family is constantly rewarding. Going into the field of gynecology provides me with the opportunity to educate and to practice preventative medicine. I enjoyed so much caring, helping not only bringing new life into the world, but taking care of females like myself.
Why I like Franklin Square: Franklin Square has become a home away from home. The staff and the Ob/Gyn team are exemplary. I am looking forward to continuing my career in a hospital setting that provides clinical and technological advancements in the field of obstetrics and gynecology as well as a challenging academic environment, while positively impacting health care in the field of women's health.

Yadira Rafuls, MD

Birthplace: Cuba
Undergraduate: University of Miami
Medical School: St. George's University
Personal Statement: Obstetrics is fascinating because it is as much an art as a science. The field offers one the opportunity to make decisions in a matter of seconds under pressure that can greatly affect outcomes. Yet even with all the modern day advances in technology, sometimes one may only be able to hold a hand in need or console.

Stefanie Rodwell, MD

Birthplace: Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Undergraduate: University of Western Ontario
Medical School: Saba University School of Medicine
Personal Statement: I initially chose to pursue a career in Ob/Gyn because of the unique combination of both medicine and surgery. As I started my residency and became more exposed to the field, I began to appreciate the unique relationship Ob/Gyns have with their patients. Patients come to you in their most vulnerable state and trust you to guide them through some of the best, and sometimes the worst, experiences of their lives. A compassionate and competent Ob/Gyn can positively impact a woman's self confidence in addition to her health and can greatly increase the quality of a woman's life. This makes the field a very rewarding one.

When I'm not at MedStar Franklin Square, you can find me spending time with friends, running, reading, listening to music and attempting to cook (small steps). I enjoy traveling and spent the first 2 years of my medical training on a Caribbean island where I did a lot of hiking and learned to scuba dive when I wasn't hitting the books. I enjoy living in Baltimore because there's always something to do whether you enjoy dining near the water, shopping, art or sports. And it's in the perfect location for weekend trips to NYC or DC. I'm certainly happy with my decision to complete my residency at MedStar Franklin Square and look forward to the next 3 years!
Why I like MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center: The small size of the program means we're able to participate in a large variety of cases and means our attendings get to know us well which means we get to do more. The best part is that there's always a friendly face greeting you in the morning.

Jessica Weddington, MD

Birthplace: Mooresville, North Carolina
Undergraduate: North Carolina State University
Medical School: Ross University School of Medicine
Personal Statement: I have always been drawn to the medical field, but it was during my clinical rotations as a medical student that I fell in love with Obstetrics and Gynecology. The practice allows physicians to care for their patients through all of life's stages, providing primary care as well as surgery. The variety of care in Obstetrics and Gynecology offers is what most impressed me and set it apart from other medical fields.
Why I like MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center: The environment at Franklin Square is warm and welcoming - everyone is close and incredibly supportive. The senior residents are always available and continually challenging us to learn more. The size of our program allows us to work closely with our attending physicians providing for opportunities that build trust and therefore more hands on experience.

Lee Wong, MD

Birthplace: Oakland, California
Undergraduate: University of California San Diego
Medical School: Saba University School of Medicine
Personal Statement: There are few specialties that allow us to enjoy a primary care type of relationship with our patients while also allowing us to diagnose and definitively treat them in the operating room. I have been blessed with the opportunity to learn and practice this field and have been fortunate enough to have had previous experience in L&D as a doula so that I had a sense of what I was getting into! Despite the long hours and incredible responsibility that being an Ob/Gyn bestows upon us, I cannot think of a better field to be in. Women allow us to be apart of one of the most intimate moments in their lives, and we are forever remembered as the doctor that brought their child(ren) into this world!
Why I like MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center: As soon as you walk into Franklin Square, it is apparent that the faculty here are kind, supportive, and dedicated to teaching us the art of practicing obstetrics and gynecology. They want us to be at our best and to do so, we immediately have the responsibility of managing and providing care to our patients and are supervised every step of the way. Additionally, the nursing staff here is superb and friendly and do everything they can to provide the best care for our patients. Since there are no fellows here, the residents have immediate access to attendings and we are able to build strong relationships with them. Everyone in the program is totally supportive and welcome each new class as an addition to their family. Whenever there is some down time, the residents have a great time together and there's a lot of laughter, fun and food!
