Educational Overview - Vascular Surgery at MedStar Washington

Clinical experience
The Vascular Surgery Fellowship will provide you with clinical experiences at three different area hospitals:

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital
MedStar Georgetown is a 609 bed hospital located in the District of Columbia, in Georgetown. The vascular faculty members there will emphasize care of patients with peripheral vascular disease, including a focus on:

  • Lower extremity bypass procedures
  • Complex aortic pathologies
  • Venous pathologies

The vascular surgery service at Georgetown includes a chief resident, third year resident and an intern, who all provide support for general surgery and vascular services surgery.

MedStar Washington Hospital Center
MedStar Washington Hospital Center has 926 beds, and is located in the District of Columbia. Trainees can expect:

  • Graduated independent experience with a diverse patient population
  • Level I Trauma Center experience with exposure to vascular trauma
  • Exposure to complex thoracic aortic disease
  • Working at one of the top cardiovascular institutes in the country
  • Participation in fenestrated aortic endografts
  • A new, hybrid endovascular OR suite

The vascular surgery service at the Hospital Center has a team, which includes a chief resident, third year resident, second year resident and two interns.

Veterans Administration Medical Center
The VA hospital is a tertiary care teaching facility located across the street from the Hospital Center. Fellows can expect:

  • Independent operating experience on patients with vascular disease, ranging from peripheral bypasses to open aortic surgery to vascular access
  • Robust outpatient vascular experience
  • Focused experience in the Vascular Laboratory
  • Opportunity to develop a clinical research project
