The Department of Radiation Medicine is a central component of the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of only 41 National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer centers in the nation and the only one in the D.C. metro area. Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center is a leader in cancer research, education, treatment, and community service.
The Radiation Research Division in the Department of Radiation Medicine is at the forefront of molecular investigations for radiation-resistant cancer cells. This interdisciplinary synergy defines the environment of MedStar Georgetown's radiation oncology trainee.
Cancer care is most effective when provided in a multidisciplinary setting. We believe that the clinical oncologist of tomorrow must have a sound knowledge case in both laboratory research and clinical experience. Advances in cancer treatment will come from the translation of laboratory innovations to the best patient care at bedside. We expect our trainees to be on the front lines of cancer treatment throughout their careers.
Our clinical approach to breast cancer treatment illustrates this philosophy. In a multidisciplinary clinic, a medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, and surgical oncologist collaboratively evaluate patients. Each of these specialists, as well as our radiology and pathology colleagues, meet weekly at a breast cancer treatment conference. Also used by our neuro-oncology, urologic oncology, thoracic oncology and gastrointestinal oncology services, this conference approach maximizes communication among the disciplines and provides a provocative forum for education.
Our radiation oncology residents thrive in this atmosphere of clinical and academic research excellence. Those interested in a clinical career gain a sound foundation for practice. Most importantly, they learn about the integration of future advances in treatment.
