Refractive Surgery Laser Procedures

Many people who are tired of wearing glasses or contact lenses seek the help of refractive surgeons. Refractive surgery improves vision by correcting refractive errors such as near-sightedness (myopia), far-sightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. A high percentage of patients enjoy 20/20 vision or better after their procedure.

LASIK

This is the most commonly performed laser procedure for the eye. During laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK), your ophthalmologist cuts a small hinged flap away from the front of your eye and reshapes parts of your cornea with a laser. Learn more about LASIK at MedStar Health.

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK)

If you are not a candidate for LASIK, photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) may be an option for you. This laser treatment is performed on the surface of the cornea and has the same excellent outcomes as LASIK surgery. PRK often requires a somewhat longer healing process.
