Experts in the treatment of heart disease

High quality, successful treatment starts with an accurate diagnosis. Our physicians take time to listen to you, thoroughly investigate your symptoms, and address any concerns you may have. Once the diagnosis is made, an individualized treatment plan will be created together with you.

The six general areas of specialization in cardiovascular medicine and surgery are: cardiology, cardiac surgery, electrophysiology, interventional cardiology and structural heart, heart failure and transplantation cardiology, and vascular surgery.

  • Cardiology

A cardiologist is a physician who specializes in the treatment of the cardiovascular system including the heart and blood vessels. Cardiologists treat a variety of medical conditions that include, but are not limited to:

MedStar Health cardiovascular medical and surgical sub-specialists include:

  • Cardiac Surgery

Cardiac surgery is surgery on the heart and great vessels which include the aorta, main pulmonary artery, pulmonary veins, superior vena cava and inferior vena cava. Cardiac surgeons also perform coronary artery bypass procedures.

  • Electrophysiology

Electrophysiology is a medical subspecialty that focuses on the electrical system of the heart. Electrophysiologists diagnosis and treat patients with irregular heart rhythms such as atrial fibrillation, slow heart beats, fast heart beats, and heart flutter.

  • Interventional Cardiology and Structural Heart

Interventional cardiology is a medical subspecialty that diagnoses and treats heart and blood vessels conditions using minimally invasive techniques that are catheter-based rather than open surgical procedures. Interventional cardiologists open blockages in coronary arteries and perform procedures within the structure of the heart.

  • Heart Failure and Transplantation Cardiology

Heart Failure and Transplantation Cardiology is a medical specialty where physicians receive advanced training in cardiovascular disease and focus on advanced heart failure. These physicians work closely with cardiac surgeons who also have advanced cardiothoracic surgical training in heart transplant and ventricular device implantation procedures.

  • Vascular Surgery

Vascular surgery is the branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the arteries and veins except the heart and brain. Vascular surgeons perform both open and endovascular procedures.

Are you at risk for heart disease?

Heart disease and strokes account for one out of four deaths in the U.S. each year. Complete our short quiz to assess your cardiovascular health.

What is heart disease?

Although the term refers to a variety of conditions affecting the cardiovascular system, the most common is coronary artery disease. This condition decreases blood flow and can ultimately lead to a heart attack.

Learn more about heart disease

When it comes to cardiovascular disease, any symptoms should be taken seriously. Don’t delay care if you’re experiencing:

  • chest pain, tightness, or heaviness
  • shortness of breath
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • pain in the jaw, neck, or left arm

Risk factors and prevention

Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the U.S. While there are some factors that you cannot change—such as getting older or your family history—there are ways you can lower your risk.

  • Blood Pressure

Uncontrolled hypertension can lead to coronary or peripheral artery disease and stroke. Check blood pressure regularly, reduce salt intake, and take any medications prescribed by your doctor.
  • Diabetes

Unmanaged diabetes can cause stroke, heart attack and peripheral artery disease, which can result in loss of vision or limbs. Prevention includes weight control and healthy eating.
  • Weight & Exercise

When you’re overweight, your heart works harder. Exercise can help lower weight and also strengthen the heart.
  • Tobacco

Smoking significantly increases your risk of heart disease. It also makes arteries less flexible, which can hinder treatments. Stiffened arteries can resist expansion from catheterization and stents.
  • Alcohol

While red wine in moderation can have some beneficial effects, higher levels of alcohol consumption can alter liver function, increasing cholesterol levels. Excessive drinking may even cause heart failure.
  • Dental Neglect

If you have dental issues, bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream and affect the heart. Poor dental hygiene can also make plaque and coronary artery disease more aggressive. Be sure to have a dental exam at least twice per year.
  • Stress

Chronic, persistent, daily stress can take a slow and dangerous toll on your heart. Find ways to relax, whether it’s meditation, going for a walk, or chatting with a friend.
