When you need answers quickly, our radiologists deliver accurate CT scan results to support your care without delay.

Effective treatment starts with an accurate diagnosis informed by radiology experts

When your doctor needs more detail about your condition, they may order a Computed Tomography (CT scan) to get a better look at your bones, blood vessels, and soft tissues. Whether you have cancer, heart disease, or another complex illness, a CT scan can help your doctor better diagnose and track your disease.

At our MedStar Radiology Network, we use the latest imaging technology to perform and analyze CT scans. And because our radiologists have advanced training in specific subspecialties, you can expect your CT scan to result in the most accurate diagnosis. This ensures you can take the right steps towards treatment.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is a CT scan?

A computed tomography scan, or CT scan, is an advanced X-ray procedure that produces cross-sectional images of the bones, blood vessels, and soft tissues. The result is a very detailed view of the body, which helps your doctor to accurately diagnose and track your disease. A CT scan is non-invasive, so you can expect a painless experience in an outpatient setting.
  • How long will a CT scan take?

A CT scan typically takes between 10 to 30 minutes to complete.

  • How should I prepare for a CT scan?

Preparation for a CT scan will vary based on the part of your body that will be scanned. Some patients may be instructed to avoid eating and drinking beginning at midnight the night before the procedure, while others may require a contrast dye injection just before the procedure begins. Your doctor or radiologist will provide you with instructions prior to your appointment.

When you arrive for a procedure, you will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms before entering the facility. You are required to wear a mask at all times during your visit. If you do not have an appropriate mask, one will be provided to you. To ensure the safety of all, we are limiting the number of visitors to our centers. Please come alone to your appointment. If you must be accompanied for extra assistance, please bring only one individual with you.

Our care team will be wearing protective equipment, so you may not see their entire face. Even though we are wearing masks for safety, we will still be able to communicate with you and it will not affect your care.

On the day of your procedure, you will be asked to remove any electronic or metal items, including clothing with zippers or buttons. You may be asked to wear a gown before being instructed to lie down on the table, which will move your body through the CT scanner. During the scan, it will be important that you remain completely still, but the test itself is otherwise fairly easy to get through.

  • When will I get my CT scan results?

We promptly send a report of your CT scan results to your ordering physician to support timely follow-up and care.
