A detailed and accurate MRI can lead to your best treatment options
When your doctor needs more information about your condition, they may order a Magnetic Resonance Imaging test, or MRI. An MRI uses radiofrequency waves to produce images from inside your body that are more detailed than other types of imaging, such as a CT scan. These images might be used to:
- Diagnose a variety of conditions
- Examine bones and joints affected by orthopedic injuries
- Identify diseased tissue or abnormal growths within the body
- Determine cancer stage progression
- Inform a personalized treatment plan
At MedStar Radiology Network, we use the latest imaging technology to perform and analyze MRIs in Maryland and the Washington, D.C., region. And because our radiologists have advanced training in specific subspecialties, you can expect your MRI test to result in the most accurate diagnosis. This ensures you can take the right steps towards treatment.

"The Radiology department was great. Not much of a wait at all. This was my first MRI ever. I was in and out of there in 45 minutes. My technologist Laurie was fantastic. She hooked me up with earplugs, headphones, some relaxing music, and a blanket. I could have taken a nap but the MRI was done in like 25 minutes. Overall a pleasant experience. Well done MedStar."

"Went in today, January 13th, to get an MRI, and the ladies at the front desk were very nice to me. The wait was very short. On-time actually, and the technician Jane was excellent, funny, and she explained the procedure the whole way. Even letting me know how much time I had left inside the machine. For a person that is somewhat claustrophobic, that is very important. 5 stars to them!"

"All the staff were so friendly, from reception to the MRI tech, who made me feel comfortable and soothed my nerves. Also a great response when I called to follow up on the report (it had already been sent) and the easiest appointment booking process I found in DC. I’d leave an extra star if I could because it’s so rare to find medical providers who make things this easy. I would def come here again!"

What is an MRI?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a test that produces detailed, cross-section images from inside your body using radiofrequency waves.
-
How long will an MRI take?
An MRI is a non-invasive scan that generally requires you to remain still for 30 to 60 minutes inside the MRI tube as the images are taken.
-
How should I prepare for an MRI?
Preparation for an MRI will vary based on the part of your body that will be scanned. Typically, you’ll be asked to remove any metal or electronic items that you have on yourself, and you may be required to change into a hospital gown. In some cases, you may receive a contrast dye injection just before the procedure begins. Your doctor or radiologist will provide you with instructions prior to your appointment.
When you arrive for a procedure, you will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms before entering the facility. You are required to wear a mask at all times during your visit. If you do not have an appropriate mask, one will be provided to you. To ensure the safety of all, we are limiting the number of visitors to our centers. Please come alone to your appointment. If you must be accompanied for extra assistance, please bring only one individual with you.
Our care team will be wearing protective equipment, so you may not see their entire face. Even though we are wearing masks for safety, we will still be able to communicate with you and it will not affect your care.
Once you are prepped for the MRI, you will be instructed to lie down on the MRI table. During the scan, it will be important that you remain completely still, but the test itself will be painless.
-
When will I get my MRI results?
We promptly send a report of your MRI results to your ordering physician to support timely follow-up and care.
