For early detection of breast cancer in most women, the MedStar Health Cancer Network recommends:
- Yearly mammograms starting at age 40, or younger if at high risk
- Clinical breast exams (CBEs) every 3 years for women in their 20s-30s and every year starting at age 40

No-cost screenings are available at MedStar Harbor Hospital and MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital.

Some women – because of their family history, a genetic mutation, or certain other factors – are at high risk for breast cancer and should be screened earlier, more frequently or with additional tests.
