Leading-edge treatments and capabilities

When you become a patient within the MedStar Health system, you have access to a full range of advanced colorectal cancer treatments and services. You can feel confident knowing you’re receiving some of the best care in the region.

  • Minimally invasive surgery

At MedStar Health, our colorectal surgeons are experienced in the latest surgical procedures to treat your type of cancer, including minimally invasive techniques, such as:

    • Laparoscopic surgery: During laparoscopic colorectal surgery, our team uses a special instrument called a laparoscope, which is a thin tube with a light and camera on the end. The laparoscope is inserted through small incisions in the abdomen.
    • Robotic-assisted procedures: Our surgeons have decades of combined experience using the da Vinci® surgical system, the most advanced robotic surgical platform available. This system overcomes the limitations of both traditional open surgery and conventional minimally invasive surgery by allowing for greater operational precision than the human hand could perform alone. During the procedure, your surgeon performs the operation from a surgeon's console using robotic arms and specialized instruments to operate within a small incision.

Because these approaches require smaller cuts than open surgery, patients benefit from shorter hospital stays, fewer complications, and faster recoveries. Your doctor will determine if you're a good candidate for minimally invasive surgery, depending on your unique case.

  • Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is a treatment that kills cancerous cells while minimizing damage to healthy cells. It is an effective way to destroy cancer cells that break off from the main tumor. It may be given through a pill, injected by a needle into a vein or muscle, or a combination of both.

  • Immunotherapy

The next wave in cancer treatment, this process harnesses the power of the body’s natural defense system. There are many types of immunotherapy and clinical trials are ongoing, but the most common drugs today are those that help boost the overall immune response to help the body identify, attack, and kill cancer cells.

  • Targeted therapies

At MedStar Health, we’re developing a vast array of targeted therapies that use drugs and other substances to weaken or damage the unique molecular traits of cancer cells. Because the treatment is focused on specific characteristics of the cancer cells, this can be done with less harm to normal cells, and often fewer side effects.

  • Radiation therapy

In some cases, radiation therapy is used before or after surgery. After surgery, it can be used to treat any cancer cells that might have been left behind because they were too small to see.

  • Clinical trials

We’re dedicated to delivering positive outcomes through research-driven care. Thanks to our partnership with Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, you have access to innovative clinical trials and the latest breakthroughs in cancer treatment.

  • Genetic counseling

Some families have a hereditary predisposition that increases their chance of developing cancer. Genetic counseling is an educational and support process for helping individuals and families learn about their risk. Our certified genetic counselors have extensive experience and can help ease anxiety, provide meaning behind testing results, and help guide care (including preventive steps).

FAQs

Want to know more? Find answers to frequently asked questions below.

  • Is colorectal cancer the same as colon cancer or rectal cancer?

Colorectal cancer is an umbrella term that includes both colon and rectal cancer. Colon cancer originates in the colon, and rectal cancer starts in the rectum, but they share many similarities in symptoms, risk factors, and treatments.

  • What are the stages of colorectal cancer?

When a colorectal cancer patient is diagnosed, they will be told what stage their disease has progressed to. There are five stages indicating how far the cancer has spread.

    • Stage 0: Cancer cells haven’t spread and are only found in the inner lining of the colon.
    • Stage 1: Cancer has spread through the colon wall but hasn't spread to lymph nodes.
    • Stage 2: Cancer is found in the outer wall of the colon and may have spread to nearby tissue.
    • Stage 3: Cancer is found in nearby lymph nodes but hasn’t spread to distant organs.
    • Stage 4: Cancer has spread to distant organs.
  • When is the best time to get a second opinion?

When you need a second opinion, it’s important to move quickly. Depending on the severity of your cancer stage, you may need to start treatment right away. And some therapies may need to begin within a certain timeframe. However, in most cases, you have enough time to get a second opinion—and your doctor will probably encourage you to.

The best time to get a second opinion is as soon as you can after receiving your initial diagnosis. When you’re looking for a second opinion, it’s best to choose a doctor or cancer center that can review your case within a few days. At MedStar Health, we are committed to seeing you within 48 hours. Talk to your doctor about how much time is appropriate to delay treatment while you seek a second opinion for your situation.

  • What types of treatments are available for colorectal cancer?

Treatment options depend on the cancer stage and may include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and immunotherapy. Early-stage cancer may often be treated with surgery alone, while more advanced stages might require a combination of treatments. Read more about the state-of-the-art care options available at MedStar Health.

  • I’m experiencing digestive discomfort. Could it be cancer?

There are a variety of reasons why you may be experiencing discomfort, including many of which are benign. Still, recurring symptoms should never be ignored. To learn more about digestive disorders and how we can help, click here.
