Chronic acid reflux
GERD is a severe, chronic acid reflux condition in which the muscle connecting your stomach to your esophagus (the tube connecting your throat to your stomach) is weak or relaxes abnormally, allowing acidic stomach contents to back up into your esophagus. While rarely life threatening, GERD can lead to internal bleeding, ulcers, narrowing of the esophagus, or esophageal cancer, if not detected early.
A likely cause of GERD is hiatal hernia (your stomach pushing up through your diaphragm muscle). Other risk factors for GERD include obesity, pregnancy, smoking, asthma, dry mouth, diabetes, and connective tissue disorder.
The most common symptoms of GERD are as follows:
- Heartburn, sometimes spreading to your throat and causing a sore throat, hoarseness, chronic cough, asthma, or the feeling of a lump in your throat
- Regurgitation, a feeling of acid backed up in your esophagus
- A feeling that food may be trapped behind your breastbone
- Nausea after eating
- Difficulty swallowing
- Chest pain
If you experience severe or frequent GERD symptoms, schedule an appointment with us to see if testing is right for you.

Barrett’s Esophagus
Barrett’s esophagus is a disorder in which the lining of your esophagus (the tube connecting your throat to your stomach) is damaged by stomach acid. The acid leaks from your stomach upward and back into your esophagus, causing a feeling like heartburn that never goes away.
If you’ve had heartburn and/or acid reflux for more than five years, consult with our team to see if you are at risk for Barrett’s esophagus.

Swallowing difficulties
Sometimes the esophagus (the tube connecting your throat to your stomach) doesn’t move like it should. This can cause food to move too quickly or slowly, backwards, or not move at all through your digestive tract. This is called an esophageal motility disorder. The most common and treatable type is achalasia.
Symptoms depend on your affected muscles and can include the following:
- Acid reflux
- Difficulty swallowing
- Heartburn
- Nausea
- Swallowing disorders
- Vomiting/regurgitation

Colorectal cancer screening is crucial to maintain digestive health.
Colon cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in men and woman in the United States. However, when detected early, it’s 90% curable. To help safeguard your health, the American Cancer Society recommends people of average risk be screened every 10 years, starting at age 45. Average risk is defined as those who DO NOT have:
- A personal history of colorectal cancer or certain types of polyps
- A family history of colorectal cancer
- A personal history of inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease)
- A confirmed or suspected hereditary colorectal cancer syndrome, such as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) or Lynch syndrome (hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer or HNPCC)
- A personal history of getting radiation to the abdomen (belly) or pelvic area to treat a prior cancer
Schedule your colonoscopy today and gain peace of mind. Most health insurance plans cover screening colonoscopies for individuals without symptoms. Consult with your insurance provider.
