Pregnancy planning
Whether you are pregnant or just beginning to plan for a baby, we are here to help you with every stage of your pregnancy, including reviewing your medical history and providing preconception lifestyle recommendations.
Understanding trimesters
Now that you're pregnant, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the changes your body will go through and how your baby will develop. A full-term pregnancy is considered 40 weeks long. Your doctor calculates your due date from your last menstrual period, which means the first two weeks of your pregnancy include the time of your period, ovulation, and fertilization.
- The first trimester: Weeks 1 to 13. During this time, your body undergoes many changes, most of which will be temporary. As your body adjusts to the growing baby, you may experience nausea, fatigue, backaches, mood swings, and stress.
- The second trimester: Weeks 14 to 26. The aches and pains experienced during the first trimester may continue, but most women find the second trimester a bit easier. Your abdomen will expand as the baby grows and you gain weight. You may experience pain in your abdomen, groin, and thighs. You may get stretch marks or acne.
- The third trimester: Weeks 27 to 40. You are almost there! During this last trimester, your ankles, fingers, and face may swell. You may also experience difficulty breathing. This is normal as the baby is getting bigger and putting more pressure on your organs.
- The fourth trimester: The first 12 weeks postpartum. After delivery, you’ll be adjusting to many changes. Care during this time focuses on physical recovery, emotional health, infant care, and social support to ensure a smooth transition into motherhood.
Pregnancy is an exciting time in your life. Your body will be going through many changes in the next few months, and regular prenatal checkups are important to your health and the health of your baby. Our OB/GYN specialists offer complete pregnancy care, from the first visit through delivery and postpartum care.
Even though prenatal checkups and labor and delivery are routine for us, we know they are not routine for you. Our skilled staff will be there for you throughout your entire pregnancy, ready to answer your questions and help you navigate the world of prenatal care and testing.
When your delivery date arrives, our state-of-the-art labor and delivery suites are ready for you. If your newborn baby requires extra care and support, we have a Level II Special Care Nursery.

Preconception counseling
If you are contemplating a pregnancy, preconception counseling may be an option for you. Preconception planning involves a detailed discussion with a knowledgeable provider to discuss concerns about a potential pregnancy.
Our specialists are experienced in providing information and counseling services to couples, and we can help you move ahead with your plans to expand your family.
You may be wondering if preconception counseling is the right thing for you and your family. Here is what you can expect to discuss with your health care provider during a preconception meeting:
- Overall health of both partners and any underlying medical or surgical concerns
- Previous pregnancy or infertility concerns
- Medication use
- Immunization and infectious disease history
- Family histories, including genetic disorders
- Concerns regarding exposure to any chemicals that may affect your pregnancy
Our staff includes specialists in many different areas of maternal and fetal health, including genetic counselors and maternal-fetal medicine experts. For patients who live with chronic conditions requiring a daily medication regimen, our reproductive toxicologist can help determine the potential exposure of the fetus to the medications, and the risks and benefits of continuing your medication.

- Maternal-fetal medicine counseling
- Reproductive genetics counseling
- Fetal diagnosis

Our team of specialists has performed thousands of fetal diagnostic procedures, such as:
- First trimester screening and nuchal translucency
- Detailed fetal ultrasound (Level II or targeted), including Doppler waveform studies
- Chorionic villus sampling (transabdominal and transcervical)
- Placental biopsy
- Amniocentesis

Maternal-fetal medicine
A maternal-fetal medicine consultation assists obstetrical care providers and midwives in managing high-risk, complicated pregnancies. Our maternal-fetal medicine specialists work closely with referring care providers in a multidisciplinary approach to provide personalized management of each patient's care.
Throughout testing and counseling, close communication is maintained with the referring physician or the certified nurse midwife. We make it a priority to discuss all test results and clinical recommendations in a timely manner.
Fetal assessment
These noninvasive tests are used to determine the well-being of the fetus:
- Comprehensive fetal ultrasound
- First trimester screening
- Biophysical profile
- Fetal echocardiography
- Doppler velocimetry
- Non-stress testing
Genetic testing and counseling
Genetic counseling services help identify the risk of having a baby with specific birth defects, developmental disabilities, or an inherited disease. Although not every couple needs testing, we recommend it for all women older than age 35 and those who have had a previous miscarriage or who have a family history of genetic disorders or birth defects.

Postpartum care
New moms should be seen by their physician within 3-12 weeks of delivery. Often called the “Fourth Trimester,” your body will go through many changes as it recovers from giving birth. Proper care can help support both your physical and emotional well-being.
Postpartum checkups allow your provider to monitor the healing process and determine if you are experiencing any complications, such as excessive bleeding, infections, or other issues. It’s also a good time to discuss future family planning and contraception options.
We offer comprehensive services, so additional support is always nearby. For example, Lauren Sundergill, PMHNP-BC, provides exceptional care for peripartum mental health, including mental health resources and guidance tailored to mothers during pregnancy and postpartum. Additionally, we have a specialized pelvic physical therapist who provides pelvic floor therapy to aid in postpartum recovery, addressing issues such as perineal pain, incontinence, and core rehabilitation.
