About the Provider

Dr. Andrew Y. Chen, MD, is a cardiologist at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where he specializes in consultative cardiology and cardiac imaging.  Dr. Chen helps support the cardiac surgery and structural heart disease programs with his expertise.

As a cardiac imaging specialist, Dr. Chen has particular expertise in echocardiography (heart ultrasound), cardiac computed tomography (CT), and nuclear cardiology imaging. These techniques allow physicians to assess the structure/function of a patient’s heart and define the mechanism pathophysiology behind the existing heart conditioncondition. Depending on the imaging study results and the patient’s symptoms, the cardiac condition, and the severity of the diagnosis, Dr. Chen and his team can help  are able to determine whether patients may be treated with medicine or require more advanced therapies like surgery.

Dr. Chen has special interests in pre-procedural planning and intraprocedural guidance for structural heart disease interventions. He is participating in several clinical trials that are currently underway at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, including research studies looking at transcatheter-cathetedar aortic valve replacement,  and transcathedaterr mitral valve repair/ and replacement, and left atrial appendage occlusion. Dr. Chen hopes to use these technologies to optimize patient safety and outcomes.

Dr. Chen received his medical degree from Sidney Kimmel Medical College before completing his residency in internal medicine at University Hospitals of Cleveland. He completed cardiology fellowships at New York Presbyterian-Columbia Hospital in New York, Yale- New Haven Hospital, and the University of Colorado Hospital Main Campus, with subspecialty training in cardiac imaging technology, including nuclear cardiology imaging, echocardiographylogy, and cardiac CT.
