About the Provider

George Ruiz, MD, specializes in the care of adults with advanced heart failure and pulmonary hypertension as well as adults with congenital heart disease and heart disease during pregnancy. Dr. Ruiz is the chief of cardiology at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital and MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiology, advanced heart failure and adult congenital heart disease.

From 2006 2007, Dr. Ruiz served as a White House Fellow and worked as a special assistant to the Secretary of Veteran Affairs. He was later a consultant to the Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs. Dr. Ruiz's work with adult congenital heart patients was featured in the Associated Press and on CNN.

Prior to his appointment at the Hospital Center, Dr. Ruiz was active at Brigham and Women's Hospital of Harvard Medical School. He founded the Minority Medical House Staff Association and was instrumental in developing Brigham's Office of Minority Career Development. Dr. Ruiz mentors thousands of medical students and speaks nationally about success strategies for medical school and residency. Dr. Ruiz helps empower the Latino community by appearing regularly on Spanish-language television broadcasts to discuss cardiovascular health. Dr. Ruiz published the book Superstar: A Guide to Success in the Clinical Years (2008). Published by Bravo, LLC.
