About the Provider

Sanna Ronkainen, MD, is a general dermatologist affiliated with MedStar Washington Hospital Center and Georgetown University Hospital. She is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the Society for Dermatology Hospitalists, the Med-Derm Society, and the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

Dr. Ronkainen sees patients for all conditions of the skin, including those that are associated with underlying health conditions. She takes a special interest in not only caring for patients with common skin conditions, like psoriasis and eczema, but also in caring for the skin of patients with HIV or other infectious diseases and patients developing skin side effects associated with cancer treatment.

Dr. Ronkainen received her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, where she graduated cum laude and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. She then joined the University of Minnesota for a five-year internal medicine/dermatology residency, where she was appointed Chief Resident for the dermatology and combined internal medicine/dermatology programs.

As a Washington, DC, area native, she is passionate about providing treatment to patients in the region. Her dedication to the field of dermatology has been recognized through a number of honors. Dr. Ronkainen was inducted into the Gold Humanism Honor Society and received the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award. She was also chosen to receive the Resident International Grant by the American Academy of Dermatology, through which she cared for patients in Botswana. Dr. Ronkainen has published various works, including journal articles and book chapters, and has presented nationally on numerous occasions.
