About me
Nancy Carroll, MD, is an endocrine surgeon at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. As a specialty trained endocrine surgeon and oncologic surgeon with excellent treatment outcomes, Dr. Carroll treats patients with both benign and malignant thyroid disease, including but not limited to thyroid cancer, thyroid nodules, hyperthyroidism, Graves disease, goiter, hyperparathyroidism, and adrenal masses. Her clinical interests include the treatment of thyroid cancer, benign thyroid disease, hyperparathyroidism, and adrenal masses.
Dr. Carroll is passionate about collaborating with experts in other specialties to provide the best treatment plan for each patient, especially when surgery may not be necessary. For example, new FDA-approved agents for treating metastatic thyroid cancer have been developed in the past few years that can help patients who are not candidates for surgery. In this case, she coordinates with a nuclear medicine specialist.
As part of a multidisciplinary thyroid cancer team at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, Dr. Carroll collaborates with experts in nuclear medicine, cardiology, endocrinology, and oncology. The strengths and benefits of a multidisciplinary team means that Dr. Carroll is able to treat patients with complex thyroid cases.
Dr. Carroll received her medical degree from New York University School of Medicine, where she graduated with honors (Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society). She then joined Massachusetts General Hospital to complete a general surgery residency and a research fellowship. Dr. Carroll completed specialty fellowship training in surgical oncology with the National Cancer Institute and, later, specialty fellowship training in endocrine surgery with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. She has published numerous original papers, book chapters, and abstracts.
Philosophy of Care
“In healthcare, one size does not fit all. In order to maximize the chance of full recovery and minimize complications, it’s essential to collaborate with the patient and understand all concerns he/she may have.
“In addition to being a healthcare provider, I view myself as an active listener, a clear communicator, and an educator. It’s important to me that my patients feel heard and that they feel prepared with the right information.
“As part of the multidisciplinary thyroid cancer team at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, I collaborate with a group of specialists that have the expertise that allows us to treat thyroid cancer using any and all methods necessary.”
