About me

Sadia Ilyas, MD, is an attending vascular surgeon at MedStar Heart and Vascular Institute. As a vascular surgeon who is also fellowship trained in surgical critical care, Dr. Ilyas manages and treats the entire spectrum of vascular surgery, including peripheral heart disease, critical limb ischemia, aortic aneurysms and dissections, carotid artery disease, thoracic outlet syndrome, mesenteric disease, venous disease, and traumatic vascular injury. As a trained intensivist, she spends part of her time taking care of patients in the ICU.

Dr. Ilyas practices both open and advanced endovascular methods of treatment and works directly with her patients on lifestyle modifications to promote the best outcomes in their health. In her fellowship, she focused her attention on aortic branch graft technology and fenestrated aortic repair for aortic dissection and aortic aneurysms. She is also trained in advanced endovascular limb salvage techniques including deep vein arterialization.

Her dual training in critical care and vascular surgery is uncommon across the country and it allows her to take care of patients in the preoperative and postoperative settings as well as in the operating room and in the ICU.

Dr. Ilyas’ research interests include looking at how physicians deliver complex vascular surgery care in a multifaceted socioeconomic context, regarding issues such as healthcare disparities. One of her goals is to improve access to all available and cutting edge technology in vascular surgery for all patients, universally.

Dr. Ilyas received her medical degree from the University of Missouri–Kansas City. She then completed her general surgery residency at Wright State University–Boonshoft School of Medicine. During that time she was selected to be a clinical and research fellow at the National Institutes of Health, Surgery Branch where she stayed for four years focusing on basic science research and translational clinical trials. After that, she completed her surgical critical care fellowship at The Ohio State University College of Medicine and her vascular surgery fellowship at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Philosophy of care

“My goal is to provide personalized and compassionate vascular surgery care at the highest level. It’s important to me that my patients fully understand their vascular problem, and that I understand what their goals and expectations are, so that we can work together to develop a lifelong treatment plan that is best for each individual patient.

“I want to develop the best plan for each patient, one that is aligned with their life goals. I understand that everyone has unique goals and expectations, and my job as their vascular surgeon is to help them manage their disease so that they can live the life that they want.

“Patients with vascular disease often have multiple physicians and providers taking care of them. We’re all invested in helping our patients live the life that they want, and communication and collaborative care between all members of the healthcare team is essential to achieve the best outcome for each patient.”
