About me

Dr. William O'Neil Suddath, MD, is the Chairman of Cardiology and the medical director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory and MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.

As an interventional cardiologist, Dr. Suddath works primarily with patients suffering from heart attacks, acute coronary disease, advanced heart failure, cardiogenic shock, and complications with advanced ventricular support devices.  Dr. Suddath performs critical care components of coronary artery disease and heart disease care, which can include cardiac catheterization with radial and femoral access and right heart catheterization with myocardial biopsy from the right internal jugular approach. In addition to these, he also implements advanced therapies and support devices, including the intra-aortic balloon pump (Impella).

Dr. Suddath is a highly experienced interventional cardiologist, having spent 22 years as an integral member of the renowned interventional cardiology team at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. He was the program director for the interventional cardiology fellowship program which trains physicians in advanced cardiac catheterization skills. Dr. Suddath was instrumental in the start-up and growth of CodeHeart, our regional program which expedites the transport and treatment of heart attacks.

Dr. Suddath’s research and educational interests focus primarily coronary artery disease. At Medstar Washington Hospital Center, he is involved in multiple drug and stent trials, as well as a trial that treats left ventricular dysfunction by using stem cells in the coronary artery to improve the overall function of the heart. Dr. Suddath is primarily interested in studying and supporting research to salvage the myocardium in the setting of acute myocardial infarction, usually done with rapid access and stents and support devices, like the balloon pump, to improve overall recovery of heart function. Most recently, he has been involved in the implementation of Impella support devices in cardiogenic shock.

After receiving his medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine, Dr. Suddath went on to complete a combined residency in internal medicine and emergency medicine at Los Angeles Harbor UCLA Medical Center. He subsequently completed a fellowship in general cardiology with advanced training in interventional cardiology at George Washington University Hospital and Sequoia Hospital.

Philosophy of Care

“Most of what I do for each patient is in the emergency situation. From my perspective, it’s addressing the issues in a timely fashion and being as thorough as possible to provide the highest quality of care.

“The thing that I try to do is to care for my critically ill patients as quickly and efficiently as possible in an effort to restore and improve their functional status and return them to society as quickly as possible.”
