The MedStar Health - Georgetown University Hospital Fellowship Program in Gastrointestinal Advanced Endoscopy
Every academic year, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital offers a specialized training program in advanced endoscopy, beginning July 1 and lasting one year. Since the program began in 1990, we’ve graduated numerous successful academic and practicing endoscopists with exceptional expertise in advanced endoscopic techniques. Fellowship participants are appointed as junior attending physicians at MedStar Georgetown for one year and are expected to conduct ongoing clinical research throughout their training.
Why train here
Our Advanced Endoscopy fellowship at MedStar Georgetown is led by the Division of Gastroenterology. All advanced endoscopic procedures are performed at MedStar Georgetown, accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO). No additional certification currently exists for this fellowship program.
The program is taught by faculty members who are members of the Division of Gastroenterology and regularly perform these procedures, each having undergone additional advanced training after their own gastroenterology fellowship. Therefore, these physicians are highly-qualified to lead and train fellows within the program.
At MedStar Georgetown, we perform approximately 1,000 ERCPs and 1,200 EUS examinations annually throughout the program. This makes us one of the highest volume centers in the country. Many of our patients come from the surrounding community and nearby states, with nearly ten percent of our patients traveling from other states. As a tertiary referral center, our hospital regularly encounters a wide variety of highly complex GI diseases, greatly enhancing the training depth our fellows receive.
Fellowship objectives
The Advanced Endoscopy program aims to train fellows interested in advanced endoscopy who will serve as leaders in the field. Therefore, we’re committed to investing and training in people who will pursue academic careers and bring advanced endoscopic techniques to places that are in need of these skills. Beyond clinical training in ERCP and interventional EUS, we’re dedicated to helping fellows establish an interest and commitment to research that will help to advance the field.
