James Dreese, MD, is an orthopaedic surgeon, fellowship-trained in sports medicine. He is double-board certified in Orthopedic Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine. He serves as associate director of Union Memorial Sports Medicine and as co-director for the MedStar Sports Medicine Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship. Dr. Dreese was recently elected as one of Maryland's two delegates to the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Council of Delegates. He's served as editor-in-chief for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and holds various leadership roles in Orthopedic Sports Medicine. Actively involved in research, he has published numerous articles and book chapters and is an associate orthopedic team physician for the Baltimore Ravens. Dr. Dreese has been repeatedly recognized in U.S. News & World Report's Top Doctors and named a Top Doctor in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine by Baltimore magazine in 2021.

His clinical focus is on the conservative and surgical management of knee, shoulder, and hamstring injuries in athletes and the general population. He emphasizes non-joint replacement solutions and has significant experience managing complex knee injuries. Dr. Dreese practices meniscal preservation techniques whenever possible and offers expertise in meniscus transplantation when needed. He has performed many meniscus root repairs, enhancing his ability to treat various meniscal injuries.

He shares his experience treating meniscus injuries, shoulder instability, and ligamentous injury management as a guest lecturer. Dr. Dreese specializes in knee ligament reconstruction, meniscus repair, and cartilage restoration, aiming to preserve the meniscus to reduce arthritis risk. He also has extensive experience treating proximal hamstring injuries with conservative and surgical approaches.
