Alex Montero, MD, MPH, is the assistant program director for Quality and Safety at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. In addition, he is the assistant director of the MedStar Diabetes Institute.
As a general internal medicine trained physician with clinical experience in both primary care and hospital medicine, Dr. Montero focuses on preventing complications of chronic illness across the continuum of care. He is primarily interested in the care of persons with diabetes in primary and acute care settings and the evolving role of diabetes care-related technologies in improving the quality of care in both care environments.
Dr. Montero has published on the positive impact of an intensive “boot camp” and longer-term “sustaining strategy” approach to technology-enabled diabetes care management. His current research includes working on the design and impact of a diabetes chatbot-assisted care management intervention and the use of CGM-augmented education and medication management at the time of discharge from the hospital.
He received his medical degree from Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. After completing an MPH degree at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Dr. Montero completed his residency and Chief Residency in Internal Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York City.
