Anand Murthi
MD, FACP, FACNP
Anand Murthi, MD, is an attending orthopaedic surgeon and chief of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. Dr. Murthi specializes in the treatment of shoulder and elbow disorders, including shoulder and elbow arthritis, replacement, fractures and instability (dislocations); rotator cuff pathology; clavicle fractures; neurologic diseases of the shoulder; revision surgery; frozen shoulder; and sports-related shoulder and elbow injuries. His expertise lies in advanced arthroscopic shoulder surgery.
At MedStar Union Memorial, Dr. Murthi directs the Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship, is head of the Shoulder and Elbow Research Program and serves on the Orthopaedic Research and Operating Room Committees. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, an elected member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Society and a member of several other professional societies. Additionally, he is a former president and founding member of the Association of Clinical Elbow and Shoulder Surgeons and the Mid-Atlantic Shoulder and Elbow Society.
Dr. Murthi is editor of the shoulder and elbow sections of Current Orthopaedic Practice and an assistant editor for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery. He is a member of the editorial advisory board for The Open Sports Medicine Journal, and he serves as a reviewer for numerous other orthopaedic journals. He has published more than 35 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, with publications in Clinics in Sports Medicine, the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, as well as other scientific journals. He frequently speaks at national and regional meetings of professional societies.
Dr. Murthi received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and he completed his general surgery internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at George Washington University Medical Center. He then completed a fellowship in shoulder and elbow reconstruction at the New York Orthopaedic Hospital-Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.

Selected Research
Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty for irreparable rotator cuff tears and cuff tear arthropathy
Reverse shoulder arthroplasty may be a reasonable treatment option for patients with cuff tear arthropathy and massive irreparable cuff tears. In this work, published by Clinics in Sports Medicine (2012;31:749-59), Dr. Murthi and colleagues summarized the biomechanics of reverse shoulder arthroplasty and concluded that further study is needed.
Reconstruction of a chronic Monteggia fracture with associated radioulnar synostosis
Orthopaedic injuries can be missed or ignored when patients have multiple traumatic injuries. Such orthopaedic injuries can be more difficult to manage at a later date. In this work, published in the American Journal of Orthopedics, Dr. Murthi and a colleague report the case of a patient whose Monteggia fracture was ignored while his head injury was addressed.
