Jeffrey Shupp, MD, FACS, oversees the Burn Research program at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Health Research Institute. He is a Professor of Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Biochemistry, and Molecular and Cellular Biology at the Georgetown University School of Medicine.
Dr. Shupp's research interests include surgical infections and sepsis, other forms of shock, coagulopathies and endothelial dysfunction, wound healing, burn pathophysiology, resuscitative strategies, host response to injury and inflammation, and abnormal wound healing, such as hypertrophic scarring. His research has resulted in approximately 200 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Shupp helped develop and design a nationally recognized research program at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, encompassing all aspects of burn research, from multi-center clinical trials to preclinical modeling and laboratory work. Dr. Shupp's research is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), as well as numerous corporate and foundation sponsors. He has numerous collaborations with burn centers, academic institutions, and other investigators across the country and is actively involved in many national and international professional societies, having previously or currently served on numerous committees and boards.
Dr. Shupp obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He has studied Molecular and Cellular Biology at both the University of Maryland and Georgetown University. Dr. Shupp joined MedStar Washington Hospital Center (MWHC) for surgical residency training and completed a fellowship in Burn Surgery and Burn Surgery Research. He provides burn care at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and Children's National Medical Center. He has academic and teaching affiliations with Georgetown University School of Medicine and the Uniformed Services University. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Burn Care and Research. He was inducted into the American Surgical Association in 2025.
