MedStar Select

Plan overview

MedStar Select is a medical plan designed for and available only to MedStar Health associates and their eligible family members. The plan provides healthcare services coverage through the MedStar Select Provider Network, which consists of providers either employed by MedStar Health or contracted to ensure the most comprehensive care is available for plan members to access.

The plan offers in-network and out-of-network coverage. If services are accessed in-network, copays are lower, and many services are paid in full ($0 copay and plan pays 100%). You do not have to select a Primary Care Physician (PCP) to coordinate your care and referrals are not necessary for specialty care.

Out-of-area coverage is available at in-network coverage levels for dependents living outside of the plan service area (e.g., covered children attending college out of state).

Out-of-network benefits add flexibility if you seek care outside of the MedStar Select Provider Network. If you receive care out-of-network, you will pay a higher portion of the cost. You must obtain prior authorization to receive out-of-network care. Contact information for obtaining prior authorization is included on the back of your insurance card.

Plan administrator

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield is the plan administrator for MedStar Select, providing administrative claims payment services. CareFirst will manage MedStar Select member support services (Customer Service), process all MedStar Select medical claims and issue Explanation of Benefits (EOB) for services provided.

Insurance cards

When you enroll in MedStar Select medical plan coverage, you and each family member on your plan will receive a MedStar Select insurance card by mail.

You must use your MedStar Select insurance card when receiving services. If you do not have an insurance card or have questions about MedStar Select, contact the MedStar Health Benefits Services Center at 833-914-2364.

You may also access your insurance card online by creating an account through CareFirst here. Click Register at the top right of the page, then Employer Sponsored for your plan type. If you do not have a Member ID, enter the primary plan holder’s full Social Security Number as the Member ID and fill out other fields/prompts to complete your account registration. Once signed into your account, click Coverage from the top navigation and then select ID Card(s).
