About me
Dr. Michael Lu is a physician specializing in Sports Medicine and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He holds board certification in both fields and specializes in non-surgical treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, sports injuries, and other conditions that cause pain and impact movement. He is passionate about promoting lifelong wellness and believes movement is medicine for everyone.
Some of the common conditions he treats include:
- Tendonitis (e.g., tennis elbow, rotator cuff, Achilles)
- Arthritis and joint pains
- Sports injuries (sprains, strains)
- Back pain and sciatica
- Shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee, hip, foot/ankle disorders
- Nerve entrapments, carpal tunnel syndrome
Dr. Lu cares for a diverse patient population, from high school athletes striving for peak performance to older adults seeking to stay active and healthy. He is dedicated to listening to his patients and works closely with each patient to develop unique treatment plans, which could include lifestyle modifications, personalized physical therapy prescriptions, and non-surgical procedures.
Dr. Lu has extensive training in a variety of procedures to help relieve pain and promote healing without surgery. These include ultrasound-guided musculoskeletal injections, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, and fluoroscopically-guided lumbar spine injections. His goal is to help you recover fully and return to the activities you enjoy, on the field or court and in everyday life.
In addition to general sports injuries, Dr. Lu has a special interest in injuries surrounding adaptive sports, golf, and racquet sports such as tennis, pickleball, and padel. He acts as an eligibility assessor for the EDGA (formerly the European Disabled Golf Association). He also serves as a sports medicine physician for the Montgomery County high school athletics program. Dr. Lu has provided medical coverage for Northwestern University D1 Athletics, the Chicago and Baltimore Marathons, SkyRise Chicago, and a range of adaptive sports teams.
Dr. Lu received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed his internship at MedStar Harbor Hospital. At Northwestern University and the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, he served as Chief Resident during his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) and then stayed on to complete fellowship training in Sports Medicine.
