MedStar Health - Georgetown University Partnership

The MedStar Health Digital Health and Innovation Fellowship is a collaboration between MedStar Georgetown / Washington Hospital Center and the MedStar Institute for Innovation (MI2). It is a one-year fellowship program, with a focus on imbuing fellows with the leadership skills, knowledge, and community of peers necessary to assume a clinical and operational leadership role in a digital health program at the hospital or health system level.

Broader impact and personal fulfillment: being an agent of change through systemwide digital innovation is a fulfilling complement to clinical patient interactions in the ED. This fellowship provides a vehicle for the physician to shape the health system at both the micro and macro levels.
Diversification of portfolio and entrepreneurship opportunities: skills gained in the fellowship are translatable to other industries, should the graduate choose to add a non-clinical path.
Networking and leadership pathway: the fellow will meet with dozens of health system leaders at both MedStar Health and other health systems, allowing development of meaningful colleague and mentor relationships.
Longevity of career and reducing burnout: the knowledge work component of digital innovation allows for more agency over work hours and location.

Fellowship structure

60% time as an attending physician with MedStar Emergency Physicians in two emergency departments (includes a tertiary care / Level 1 Trauma Center and a community hospital site).
Immersion in a health system innovation center with systemwide scale and opportunities. MedStar Health- facilitated programs delivered more than 2 million telehealth encounters in the last 3 years across multiple modalities, platforms, and delivery models.
Educational curriculum focused on best practices for clinical care delivery as well as regulatory, revenue cycle, and business development competency.
A seat in the MedStar Emergency Physicians LEAD (Leadership Excellence and Development) Program is reserved for the Digital Innovation Fellow, as a dedicated investment in developing physician leadership skills.
Opportunities for engagement in research and medical education.
Diverse resources and faculty mentorship in areas of informatics, executive leadership, and innovation.

After fellowship

This fellowship will give you the strong foundation needed to assume roles such as:
Telehealth, digital health, or innovation leader within a hospital system (academic, not-for-profit, or private)
Medical director, Chief Medical Officer, or consultant for a telehealth or digital health company
Telehealth physician on a direct-to-consumer platform (individual practice or overseeing others)
Telehealth educator at the medical student, resident, fellow, faculty, or associate levels
Digital health entrepreneur
Whether your practice ends up being academic or community, or outside of clinical medicine (tech, research, government agency, non-profit organization), the skills and experience gained from this telehealth/innovation fellowship will make you a valuable asset in this rapidly-evolving healthcare landscape.

Curriculum

Goals and objectives

Fellows will work closely with core telehealth faculty to:

Use telehealth effectively to deliver clinical care across multiple platforms and modalities.
Develop broad domain expertise in: telehealth technologies and AI, building workflows, provider training, economic framework of telehealth, and regulatory, legal, compliance.
Develop deep domain expertise in at least one telehealth modality.
Use informatics and telehealth interactions to design patient centered encounters resulting in clinically appropriate, high value and meaningful provider and patient experiences.
Work with clinical faculty and the Georgetown University School of Medicine to develop foundational faculty, resident and medical student curricula.
