The MedStar Health - Georgetown University Emergency Simulation & Safety Fellowship
We are pleased to offer a one year fellowship in Medical Simulation and Patient Safety, and we recruit one fellow annually. In addition to developing a broad portfolio of simulation cases, the sim fellow teaches at our annual cadaver lab, leads wilderness medicine simulation, and attends a prestigious simulation instructor training course.
The fellowship largely focuses on resident education, and the fellow plays an important role in the educational design process. In addition, the fellow leads simulation sessions for both medical students and emergency medicine faculty.
MedStar Health is a large, complex healthcare system hosting nearly 100 training programs, and our fellow has opportunities to teach, collaborate with, and learn from simulation experts in a diverse array of medical specialties and related disciplines.
Our fellow works directly with patient safety and human factors-focused EM faculty, who are leaders at the National Center for Human Factors in Healthcare, an organization with national and worldwide expertise in patient safety and with a healthy portfolio of federally funded research projects.
Our program
We have two high-tech simulation centers in Washington, DC and Baltimore. There are also many in situ teaching opportunities at the ten hospitals within the MedStar Health system. The fellow will be integrated into our education technology group of MedStar Health, the Simulation Training and Education Lab (SiTEL). SiTEL’s academic partners include the Georgetown University School of Medicine, the MedStar Health Office of Graduate Medical Education, the MedStar Health Research Institute, and the National Center for Human Factors Engineering in Healthcare.
Mentorship
Our fellows will be mentored by our core Emergency Medicine Residency and Simulation faculty to learn how to use simulation effectively in education. They will be involved in all aspects of Emergency Medicine simulation:
Teaching Emergency Medicine Residents
- Full Simulation Days with all EM Residents – focus on Team Training and Procedural Skills
- Individualized resident simulation days – focus on mastery of procedural skills and critical thinking
- Simulation Case Conference during EM lecture days
- ACGME Milestones Procedural and Scenario testing
- ACGME Individualized Interactive Instruction – Additional Procedural Skill Teaching Sessions offered to residents on lecture days
- Other large scale EM simulation events such as Wilderness Day, Disaster simulations, and SimWars
- Design minimum 12 simulation cases to be submitted during the year which will be a part of the Fellow’s portfolio.
Teaching 3rd and 4th Year Georgetown Medical Students
- Help to further integrate medical student safety curriculum with simulation -assist with existing 4th year medical student safety case and expand to third year medical students
- Procedural Skills development
- Develop a case to be run during medical student clerkship incorporating team-based learning and safety
Teaching MEP Faculty
- Assist with the design and implementation of an ongoing faculty simulation curriculum to regularly review and refresh procedural and other critical skills
Work with other MedStar Health Simulation Programs/Specialties
- There are many opportunities to participate in our MedStar-wide Critical Care “Code Blue” Refreshers, Critical Care Simulations, General Surgery Simulations, Pediatric Code Simulations, and our Obstetrics “MOST” program for interdisciplinary high-risk scenarios and safety training
- Work with our Georgetown/MedStar EM Ultrasound and Sports Medicine fellowship programs to enhance their simulation education and training
- Run Crisis Resource Management Cases with multidisciplinary teams

MedStar National Center for Human factors in Health Care is a valuable resource available to our fellow for their project

Safety

Learn the principles of patient safety, safety event reviews, and building safer health care systems in a HRO (“high reliability organization”)

Conduct safety event reviews on an organizational level and understand the cross-section of safety and simulation

Work with human factors and patient safety experts, subject matter experts, and engage in quality and safety leadership meetings

Faculty Development
- Attend the Center for Medical Simulation Instructor Course in Boston. All expenses paid.
- Our fellow will be well prepared to take the Society of Simulation in Health Care Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator exam
- Opportunities to participate in regular faculty development opportunities offered through MedStar Emergency Physicians, MedStar Washington Hospital Center, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, and the Georgetown University School of Medicine

- Bi-annual Simulation Journal Club with articles selected by simulation and safety fellow

Evaluation
- Regular meetings with simulation leadership team
- Case development mentored by simulation leadership team
- Case scenarios and debriefing supervised by simulation leadership team with directed feedback immediately afterwards

Operations
- The fellow will learn many areas of simulation lab operations during the fellowship

Eligibility:
The Georgetown/MedStar Emergency Simulation & Safety Fellowship is a one year program designed for graduates of ACGME approved Emergency Medicine residency programs. Candidates will be board certified or board eligible in Emergency Medicine through ABEM or AOBEM prior to matriculation.
