The MedStar Health - Georgetown/National Rehabilitation Hospital Fellowship Program in Sports Medicine (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation)
Georgetown University School of Medicine in conjunction with MedStar National Rehabilitation Network offers an ACGME-accredited fellowship in sports medicine. The educational resources available to us at MedStar and within the National Capital Sports Medicine Consortium (NCSMC) make this one of the premier training opportunities in sports medicine today.
Our one-year program provides an integrated, multi-disciplinary training experience to develop the knowledge base and skills necessary to manage the wide breadth of musculoskeletal injuries and sport-related medical concerns, from acute to chronic. Particular expertise will be developed in evaluation and management of injuries to the spine, tendons, ligaments, and joints, including various interventional techniques to treat these issues. There is also experience with other related concerns such as fracture care, exertional leg pain, sports cardiology, heat/cold injury, sports nutrition, sports psychology, musculoskeletal radiology, and neurologic injuries such as concussion and peripheral nerve entrapment.
In addition to the outpatient clinic experience at MedStar National Rehabilitation Network, our fellow benefits from extensive training opportunities, working with orthopedic surgery within the departments at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and Georgetown University, as well as with physicians from family medicine, emergency medicine, internal medicine, and radiology at MedStar and affiliated programs. The fellow will receive instruction and hands-on experience with diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound, including image-guided procedural skills such as regenerative medicine and percutaneous tenotomy techniques. Additionally, the fellow will have the opportunity for training in fluoroscopic-guided spine and joint procedures.

To complement our extensive clinical training experience, we offer what is likely THE BEST didactic program in the country. We are fortunate to be affiliated with the National Capital Sports Medicine Consortium (NCSMC), in which several sports medicine training programs collaborate to provide a unique, mutually beneficial educational experience. The NCSMC consists of military and civilian programs drawing from faculty in family medicine, military medicine, emergency medicine, and PM&R, providing extensive exposure and variety in terms of training background and clinical experience. This collaborative didactic program provides many exceptional training opportunities. First, the NCSMC offers a robust ultrasound curriculum led by RMSK and AIUM-certified physicians who facilitate at national workshops. In addition to regular didactic and scanning sessions, it incorporates cadaveric workshops for traditional and regenerative ultrasound guided interventions. Additionally, the fellow gets a pre-season clinical skills crash course, incorporating a sideline coverage boot camp and SIM lab for core hands-on skills. The comprehensive research/didactic curriculum comprises approximately 20% of the fellow’s time, in which the fellow is involved in not only ultrasound and didactic sessions, but also in traditional presentation and research training opportunities, such as journal clubs and grand rounds, and more inventive formative experiences such as a mock IRB submission.

We will schedule applicants' interviews during October. The results of the match will be available in January.
