Federico Asch, MD, FACC, FASE, serves as Director of the Echocardiography Core Lab at MedStar Health Research Institute (MHRI) and Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University. In this role, he leads one of the nation's premier cardiovascular imaging core laboratories, supporting investigator-initiated, industry-sponsored, and multicenter clinical trials through advanced imaging analysis, quality oversight, and implementation of imaging standards. His work helps ensure the rigorous evaluation of new therapies, devices, and technologies and advances MHRI's mission to improve patient care through research.
Dr. Asch is an internationally recognized leader in cardiovascular imaging and echocardiography. He currently serves as President-Elect of the American Society of Echocardiography and will assume the presidency in 2027. Over the course of his career, he has held numerous leadership positions within the Society, including Chair of the Guidelines and Standards Committee, Chair of Scientific Sessions, Chair of the World Summit of Echocardiography, and Chair of International Affairs. He is also a past president of the American Heart Association Board for the Greater Washington region and serves on the MedStar Health Research Institute Institutional Review Board.
A board-certified cardiologist, Dr. Asch's research and clinical interests include cardiovascular imaging in clinical trials, implementation of imaging standards, artificial intelligence applications in ultrasound, cardiomyopathies, and valvular heart disease. He has authored more than 230 peer-reviewed publications in leading journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, JACC, Nature, The Lancet, European Heart Journal, and the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography.
Dr. Asch earned his medical degree from the Universidad de Buenos Aires Medical School and completed a cardiology fellowship at Instituto Cardiovascular de Buenos Aires in Argentina. He subsequently completed an echocardiography fellowship, followed by residency and fellowship training in cardiovascular disease through the Georgetown University/MedStar Washington Hospital Center/DC VA Medical Center program. He has received recognition from the Argentinian and Mexican Societies of Cardiology and was named a Distinguished Citizen of the City of Buenos Aires.
