Krishnan Venkatesan

Krishnan Venkatesan, MD, is the director of Reconstructive Urology, Department of Urology, MedStar Washington Hospital Center. In addition, he is an assistant professor in the Department of Urology, Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Dr. Venkatesan consults with patients and provides a variety of treatment options for many urological conditions. His work is focused on improving quality of life for his patients. His research on urology and reconstructive urology has been published in professional journals, including the Journal of Urology, Urology, Advances in Urology, Archives in Cancer Research, and Prostate International. He serves as a peer-reviewer for the Journal of Urology, Biomed Central Urology, and Advances in Urology. To keep up with advances in medicine, he maintains memberships in several professional societies, including the American Urological Association, the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons, the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, and the American Medical Association.

Dr. Venkatesan has received several awards from hospitals and professional associations for his research on urology, and he is frequently invited to speak on urology topics at national meetings of healthcare professionals. Topics he has presented have included urologic reconstruction, erectile dysfunction, genitourinary malignancies, and new techniques for managing urethral narrowing. Dr. Venkatesan is fluent in English and Tamil (South India), and he is proficient in Portuguese and Spanish.

His medical degree is from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, MI, where he also completed a residency in Urology. He then completed a fellowship in Genitourinary Reconstruction at the Institute of Urology, University College London Hospital, UK. He also completed an additional fellowship in Urethral Reconstruction at the Kulkarni Institute for Urethral Reconstruction in Pune, India, and he was a Visiting Fellow in Urologic Reconstruction at the Sava Perovic Foundation in Belgrade, Serbia.

Selected Research

Surgical Repair of Bulbar Urethral Strictures:  Advantages of Ventral, Dorsal, and Lateral Approaches

Although buccal mucosa grafts are commonly used to repair narrowing of the urethra, it is unknown which approach for the placement of such grafts is optimal. In this work, Dr. Venkatesan and colleagues describe common surgical approaches for urethral reconstruction. This research was published in Advances in Urology (2015;2015:397936. doi: 10.1155/2015/397936).

Management of Panurethral Stricture Disease in India

Panurethral stricture involving the penile and bulbar urethra is a common urological problem in India. In this work, Dr. Venkatesan and colleagues present their experience with a minimally invasive surgical technique for panurethral stricture repair. Results of this work have been published in the Journal of Urology (2012:188(3):824-30. doi: 10.1016/j.juro.2012.05.020).
