Michelle Roett

Michelle A. Roett, MD, MPH, FAAFP, CPE is a Professor, Chair, and Clinical Chief of the Department of Family Medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. She is also the Director of DC Area Health Education Center for GUMC and co-Medical Director of HOYA Clinic at the Triumph, Georgetown University School of Medicine’s student run clinic for homeless families.

Dr. Roett is the Chair of the GUMC Faculty Development Subcommittee on Mentoring, focused on creating an inclusive, welcoming environment for career development and success of new faculty. She is also co-Chair of the newly formed Racial Justice Committee for Change, focused on improving racial equity in admissions, education, clinical care, and leadership across schools and programs on the GUMC campus to better achieve Georgetown’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and to address systemic racism as a social determinant of health. She is the former Residency Program Director at the MedStar Health/Georgetown-Washington Hospital Center Family Medicine Residency Program at MedStar Health Family Medicine at Fort Lincoln, sees her patients there, and continues to precept residents and students.

Dr. Roett received her medical degree from Georgetown University, completed her residency and Community Health fellowship training with Georgetown Family Medicine, and her Master of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health.

Dr. Roett continues to practice prenatal care, integrated behavioral health, women’s health, newborn care, pediatric, adult and geriatric care. She is the Principal Investigator for more than $11 million dollars in federal and private funding on health equity research and education, integrated behavioral health and primary care, increasing the primary care workforce through innovation in medical education, scholarships, longitudinal community based-learning and primary care mentorship, including a recent award for DC Safe Babies, Safe Moms to improve maternal and child health in DC. Her community partners include DC Department of Human Services, Unity Health Care, Community of Hope, Mary’s Center, and the DC Primary Care Association. She directs the Teaching Scholar track and Health Policy tracks for the Family Medicine residency program, teaches first through fourth year medical students, and is a health equity research mentor for medical students and undergraduates. She has authored several peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters and delivers invited lectures on Underserved Care, Community Partnerships and Engagement, Health Disparities and Health Equity, Medical Student Recruitment to Family Medicine, Evidence-Based Medicine, Faculty Development, Women’s Health, Health Literacy, Chronic Diseases, and Population Health.

Selected Research

Meeting the Needs of the Underserved: An Innovative Communication Curriculum Using Interprofessional Group Visits and Video-Feedback to Improve Clinical Outcomes

Dr. Roett is a co-investigator and project director of the Diabetes Group Visit curriculum for this project sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration. This program examines whether group visits for patients with uncontrolled diabetes affect diabetes indicators, self-efficacy and patient satisfaction. It also examines whether group visits for diabetic patients with limited health literacy are more effective than usual care.

System Implementation Award Program, Fort Lincoln Family Medicine Center

Dr. Roett was principal investigator on this project sponsored by the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation. This project was designed to increase pediatric immunization compliance rates to meet national standards, decrease missed opportunities for immunizations and decrease the no-show rate for routine pediatric appointments.
