Welcome to Behavioral Health Day Program at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center

Adult Intensive Day Program also known as Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

What is it? Our PHP, located on the 4th floor, suite 4017, is designed for individuals who require intensive, structured behavioral health treatment yet do not require the 24-hour care provided through our Inpatient Program. Participants can enter the program in two ways—either as a “step down” from an inpatient hospitalization, or as a “step up” from a community or outpatient setting.

The program is structured to provide individualized behavioral health monitoring, with the support of multiple groups, as well as family and individual therapy sessions, as needed.

American Heart Association dietary nutrition is provided for breakfast and lunch, and snacks are provided.

PHP participants return home in the evening and maintain important links to their family and their community. This allows them to draw on new skills that help instill confidence and promote independence.

How does it work? Participants attend sessions from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

How long is it? The length of stay in this program is usually one to six weeks, depending on the individual's progress.

Goals of PHP

The goals of PHP are to help participants understand their current problems and to improve their coping skills. This is accomplished through a wide range of activities including:

  • Individualized therapy and treatment planning
  • One-on-one consultation with a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner
  • Family therapy and group counseling
  • Stress management and relaxation skills
  • Goal setting and planning for life after PHP
  • Improving individual support systems
  • Overcoming negative thoughts
  • Developing good sleep habits
  • Benefits of medication

Insurance

When determined to be medically necessary, PHP is covered by most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. A financial specialist is available to answer your questions.
