Mary-Michael Brown, DNP, MSN, BSN, RN, is vice president of Nursing Practice Innovation for MedStar Health. In this role, she works collaboratively with the system’s senior vice president and chief nursing officer, and MedStar’s hospital chief nursing officers to drive nursing practice innovation across the organization. Her responsibilities include creating and disseminating evidence-based clinical practice guidelines, providing oversight of the Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) and the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) programs, serving as an executive liaison to the MedStar Nursing Practice Council, and offering nursing input for system initiatives.
Brown started her nursing career at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in 1976, and subsequently practiced in progressive clinical roles at Boston University Medical Center, Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego, APACHE Medical, Bridge Medical, Alaris Medical, and Inova Alexandria Hospital. In 2007, she rejoined MedStar Health as director of Outcomes Measurement and then assistant vice president of Outcomes and Quality at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. In 2012, she assumed her current role in Corporate Nursing.
Brown has been honored for her nursing achievements, including recipient of the Martha E. Brill New Researchers Award from the American Nurses’ Foundation and The George Washington University Alumni Award for the School of Nursing, both in 2011. Active in nursing education, Brown is a senior clinical service professor and a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council at The George Washington University School of Nursing. Her professional involvement includes membership in the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the American Organization of Nurse Executives, Sigma Theta Tau International, Phi Epsilon Chapter, and the Washington Regional Nursing Research Consortium.
Brown received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Georgetown University School of Nursing, a Master of Science in Nursing from Boston College Graduate School of Nursing and a Doctor of Nursing Practice from The George Washington University School of Nursing.
