About me
Catherine Tierney, MSN, is a certified family nurse practitioner in the urology department at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Health Medical Center at Leisure World Boulevard. She is a professional member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
As a nurse practitioner, Katie assesses, diagnoses, and treats male and female patients for various urologic diseases and conditions in outpatient clinics. Her evidence-based treatment approach includes prescribing medications, ordering and interpreting tests, and providing post-treatment consultations. Dedicated to lowering barriers to healthcare access, she provides telehealth and in-person appointments and encourages patients to contact her directly via the patient portal.
Katie’s primary clinical interests lie in male health, particularly erectile dysfunction and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Before recommending surgical interventions, she considers and explores alternative treatment options for erectile dysfunction, such as oral medications, intraurethral suppositories, and intracavernosal injections.
Katie earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. She later pursued a Master of Science in Nursing to provide advanced patient care, including diagnosing conditions and prescribing medications.
Katie has been recognized for her outstanding leadership skills and excellent patient care during her career. She received the Faculty Award Recipient from the Catholic University of America in 2011. In 2014, MedStar Washington Hospital Center selected her as a finalist for the John J. Lynch Moral Courage Award.
Philosophy of Care
“My philosophy of care is evidenced-based and holistic. I treat the person as a whole rather than just the condition. I strive to provide my patients with the same level of care I want for a loved one or family member. My goal is to make my patients feel heard, collaborate with them to co-create a treatment plan, and clarify any questions they have before leaving the consultation. Patients are always welcome to reach out to me directly with any doubts or concerns they have at any time during their treatment.”
