Welcome to MedStar Health’s Nursing Academic-Practice Partnership program website. We are committed to developing and training our current and future healthcare workforce at MedStar Health. As part of our commitment, we prioritize providing our diverse practice sites as learning environments for students, instructors, and associates through our Nursing Clinical Placements program.

Nursing Clinical Placements program

Our nursing clinical placements program spans our ten acute care/rehabilitation hospitals and over 300 ambulatory practice sites in the Washington DC, MD, and VA metro areas.

The MedStar Health Nursing Clinical Placements program provides learning environments for the following student groups:

  • Nursing - all program types, including Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) and Patient Care
Technicians (PCT) and excluding Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA)
  • Medical Assistants
  • Surgical Technician
  • Sterile Processing Technician
  • Emergency Management Services
  • Respiratory Therapy

Placement request process

Academic partners must establish or confirm an education affiliation agreement (EAA) before submitting a student placement request.

Distance learning (online) programs: A distance learning program is defined by the DC Board of Nursing (DCBON) as any program where the didactic component of the course is administered online. All distance learning nursing placements at any DC facility will be subject to the DCBON approval process. Schools must pursue and be granted approval with the DCBON before seeking a placement at a DC facility. See this memo from DCBON for more information on the process.

Once the above are confirmed, submit a placement request:

  • Entry into Practice, RN-BSN, and non-nursing students: School placement coordinators will submit placement requests through Exxat. RN Refresher requests will also follow this process. Please see our Spring 2026 MDDC Clinical Group Request Calendar. We do not accept requests for prelicensure placements or preceptors via email.

  • Advanced Practice Provider (APP) and other graduate students: Currently, graduate students must find their own preceptor to be considered for placement at MedStar Health. We recommend students leverage their professional and/or alumni networks to identify preceptors for placement. Please complete and submit the Student Placement Request Form to the MedStar Health placement coordinator who oversees student placements at your desired placement site. Once the placement is approved, the placement will be assigned directly to the school. The school will need to confirm the placement prior to the student being able to begin onboarding requirement uploading. For other disciplines not listed above, please reach out to the MedStar contact you usually work with for student placements to determine the process.

Onboarding resources

Students and school coordinators will submit onboarding/compliance documents through the Exxat platform. We need all onboarding requirements complete 2 weeks prior to the student’s start date.
