About the Provider

Dr. Mitchell is the chief of Sports Medicine, a member of the MedStar Orthopaedic Institute, and an Orthepaedic Surgeon at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center. He is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in arthroscopy and treats all types of sports injuries, including injuries to the shoulder, elbow, knee, ankle, and foot. Dr. Mitchell has specific training in the treatment of cartilage defects of the knee with articular cartilage implantation and meniscal transplantation. In addition, he performs total joint replacement surgery of the shoulder, hip and knee.
Dr. Mitchell has a specific interest in the throwing athlete and has published on UCL reconstruction with Dr. James Andrews. Additionally, he has conducted biomechanical research on meniscal repair.
A native of Bethesda, Maryland, Dr. Mitchell graduated from St. Albans school. He attended Brown University and graduated with a degree in Law and Public Policy in 1997. He then conducted basic science research at the National Institutes of Health for a year before attending the Georgetown University School of Medicine for medical school. Dr. Mitchell continued at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital for both his general surgery internship and his orthopaedic residency. After completing his orthopaedic training, Dr. Mitchell moved to Birmingham, Alabama to do a fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine with Dr. James Andrews at the American Sports Medicine Institute.
Currently, Dr. Mitchell serves as a team physician for D.C. United and Sherwood High School in Olney, Maryland.
Dr. Mitchell is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons as well as the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine. He has been a team physician for the University of Alabama, the University of West Alabama, and the Birmingham Barons AA baseball team.
