About me
Dr. Weiner is an internationally-recognized medical oncologist specializing in gastrointestinal cancers. He is also an accomplished researcher developing novel immunotherapy treatments – essentially triggering the body’s own immune system to identify and destroy cancer. He is recognized for his laboratory and clinical research focusing on these new therapeutic approaches. Dr. Weiner wants to understand why some tumors become resistant to therapy and other forms of cancer immunotherapy, with the goal of developing new treatments to overcome that resistance. He lectures extensively on these forms of targeted therapies, which block the growth and spread of cancer.
He serves as director of the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center – Washington, D.C.’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center – and the MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute, which combines medical expertise, the latest therapies, and research across MedStar Health throughout the region. Dr. Weiner is also associate vice president at Georgetown University Medical Center, chair of the oncology department at Georgetown University School of Medicine, and clinical director of cancer services at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
In these roles, Dr. Weiner is responsible for operations, development, research, clinical and educational missions. As the Institute’s director, he oversees the clinical operations of the MedStar Health cancer service line, and leads the advancement of clinical care and research programs spanning prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, survivorship and end-of-life care across the region. With Georgetown Lombardi serving as the Institute’s “research engine,” patients throughout the region have access to unmatched expertise and clinical trials closer to where they live and work.
Dr. Weiner previously served as chairman of the Medical Oncology Department and vice president for Translational Research at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, PA. He held an endowed chair in medical science and was the driving force behind developing an immunotherapy laboratory and clinical programs, as well as establishing the Center's medical oncology fellowship program. Dr. Weiner also served as professor in the Department of Medicine at Temple University School of Medicine.
Dr. Weiner's Philosophy of Care
We live in a time of great hope in the area of cancer therapy. Many new, important and life-changing treatments are now being developed. We are privileged to offer patients tomorrow's treatments today. And now, through the MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute, we can extend that mission across the region. With this progress in mind, I strive to offer all my patients the best possible therapies for their diseases, always mindful that I am neither treating a disease nor a patient, but a person with a life, a family and a combination of hopes and fears.
Working at a great cancer program like this gives me the opportunity to collaborate with leading international experts to assure that my patients can benefit from the best possible care during the course of their journeys.
