About me
Ahmar Hashmi, MD, is a general internal medicine physician at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. As an internist, Dr. Hashmi sees patients with a wide range of conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, congestive heart failure, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), chronic kidney disease, and coronary artery disease.
His treatment methods focus on a thorough evaluation, recommendations for lifestyle choices, medication therapy, and referral to appropriate specialists when necessary.
His clinical interests include diabetes weight management, smoking cessation, and all chronic conditions. Dr. Hashmi is encouraged by new medications developed for chronic conditions, such as heart failure and diabetes, that allow internists to manage these patients.
Dr. Hashmi received his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine before completing an internal medicine residency at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia, where he served as Chief Resident and was honored with the Resident Ethics Award. He is a member of the American College of Physicians and the American Medical Association.
Philosophy of care
“My philosophy of care is rooted in a solid physician-patient relationship. Patients are their own instrument of change and, since they must take ownership of their care, it’s my job to make sure that I listen to their concerns and that they’re as well informed of their condition as possible. I empower my patients with information so they can make the right decisions for themselves.
“My treatment methods focus on lifestyle changes, such as diet, exercise, and smoking and alcohol cessation. I only escalate care once we’ve addressed everything else. This also pertains to referrals to specialists, which I make only when medically necessary.
“I feel honored when my patients say that I always listened to them and that I guided them through their care journey with compassion.”
