About me

Caitlin Givens CNM, WHNP-BC joined the Midwives of MedStar team in January 2023. She has been a Certified Nurse-Midwife and board-certified Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner since 2013. In addition to her position at MedStar Health, she provides prenatal, postpartum, and GYN related care. She is also an adjunct faculty member at the Georgetown University School of Nursing.

Originally from Northern California, Caitlin has lived in the DC area since 2009. She was drawn to Midwifery while serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Northern Senegal. She holds a BA from Skidmore College in Sustainable Human Development, an MSc in Population and Development from the London School of Economics, and a BS in Nursing and an MS in Nursing from Georgetown University. She is fluent in English, Spanish, and French.

Philosophy of Care

“I am particularly passionate about practicing evidence-based midwifery care, with a strong emphasis on shared decision making between the client and the provider. The birth world can be intensely overwhelming to navigate. There are so many different philosophies and styles, and there is an abundance of easily accessible misinformation and flawed data out there. I believe that my job is to give families the most up-to-date, robust information available, and help them make the safest, most appropriate choice to meet their wants and needs.”

“While in midwifery school, I had a solo doula practice. Because I began my journey as a one-to-one support person, I have a particular fondness for labor-sitting and being present with families as they grow. Having had three wildly different birth experiences myself, I am a fierce advocate for providing trauma-informed patient-centered care, and I strive to bring that intention with me to every client interaction.”
