About me
Katherine (Katie) Murphy, DNP, FNP-C, is a nationally certified and doctorally prepared nurse practitioner with MedStar Health Gastroenterology at St. Mary’s Hospital. She specializes in gastroenterology and works in collaboration with MedStar Health’s board-certified gastroenterology physicians.
Katherine is skilled in diagnosing and treating a wide variety of gastroenterology conditions, including gastroesophageal reflux disease, H. pylori, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, esophagitis, peptic ulcer disease, gastritis, irritable bowel disorders, pancreaticobiliary disorders, colitis, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease. She is also deeply passionate about preventative screenings and often conducts pre-procedure visits for colorectal cancer screenings. Her comprehensive approach to care includes lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise, medication management, and other therapeutic interventions.
Katherine was born and raised in St. Mary’s County. She attended Towson University to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. After her undergraduate studies she worked as a registered nurse at The Johns Hopkins Hospital for nine years specializing in medical surgical oncology (gastroenterology and otolaryngology malignancies) and radiation oncology. She then attended Johns Hopkins University to obtain a Doctor of Nursing Practice and worked in family medicine as a primary care nurse practitioner in Annapolis, MD, while completing a primary care fellowship through Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. She is happy to be back in St. Mary’s County serving the community that raised her.
“My philosophy of care is patient centered. I believe everyone deserves to feel comfortable, listened to, and respected while receiving health care. I want my patients to feel empowered to ask questions and be understood and well informed. I am passionate about patient education and am honored to work with my patients to help them feel their best and reach their goals.”
