About me
Laurel Mueller, DO, MPH, is a board-certified internal medicine physician at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. As a general internist, Dr. Mueller sees patients for a wide range of conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, cancer screening, medication management, and basic preventative health services.
Dr. Mueller approaches her patients by having thorough conversations regarding their health complaints, health history, and goals for treatment. She uses this information, in combination with laboratory testing and imaging, to arrive at a diagnosis.
Dr. Mueller’s clinical interests include polypharmacy management and health education. Her research interests involve the social aspects of healthcare, quality improvement initiatives in the clinic, and education techniques for resident doctors in training. Dr. Mueller teaches resident doctors in training and her practice is firmly rooted in patient education.
Dr. Mueller received a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine after earning a Master of Public Health in Community and Behavioral Health from the University of Iowa. She then completed her internal medicine residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Before joining MedStar Washington, Dr. Mueller was an attending internist at San Ysidro Health Center in San Diego.
Philosophy of care
“My philosophy of care is rooted in a patient-first perspective. My job as a healthcare provider is not to look at someone and tell them what they’re supposed to do; it’s to listen to them and be a guide and advisor. I’m in the clinic to listen to my patients–their concerns and their goals.
“My biggest interest is building rapport with my patients and helping them through complicated medical problems. I try to talk my patients through all of the available treatment options that they are candidates for so that we can make shared decisions in their care.
“I feel honored when patients say that I listened to them and that they trust me to help them with their health.”
