Mamadi Papus Keita, MD, is a cardiac surgeon specializing in heart transplants at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He is a member of the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Dr. Keita cares for patients with coronary artery disease, heart valve disease, aortic aneurysms and dissections, heart failure, and pulmonary hypertension. His expertise includes on-pump and off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery, valve repair and replacement, complex aortic surgery, heart transplantation, and mechanical circulatory support. Additionally, he offers several highly specialized and rare procedures, including beating heart transplant, heart transplant for patients born with various heart defects, advanced mechanical circulatory support, and pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE) for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH).
Dr. Keita’s research centers on improving outcomes for patients with right ventricular failure and advancing long-term options for right ventricular mechanical support. He also focuses on addressing healthcare disparities both globally and within underserved communities in the United States. Excited by emerging modalities in organ preservation, technologies related to artificial hearts, and the integration of artificial intelligence into patient care, he believes the future is bright, with greater access to heart failure surgery, safer complex operations, and improved outcomes for patients who previously had few treatment options.
Dr. Keita graduated magna cum laude from the University of Medicine and Health Sciences in St. Kitts and Nevis. He completed a residency in general surgery at Carle Foundation Hospital, followed by a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Case Western Reserve University / University Hospitals, and an advanced fellowship in heart and lung transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, and the surgical management of pulmonary hypertension at Duke University.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Keita is a husband and proud father of three. He grew up across several countries and enjoys connecting with people from different cultures and languages. In his free time, he enjoys playing and coaching soccer, training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and Latin dancing.
Philosophy of Care
“My philosophy of care is centered on restoring health and life. Successful surgery isn't just about fixing the heart—it's about helping patients return to the people and moments that matter most. Whether that's celebrating birthdays, holidays, graduations, or simply enjoying everyday life with loved ones, my goal is to help patients regain both years of life and quality of life.”
