About me
Dr. Kozam is a board certified, fellowship trained gastroenterologist who has served the Olney community for two decades. His areas of special interest and expertise include gastrointestinal motility disorders (conditions that affect the nerves and muscles of the gastrointestinal tract). He evaluates and treats gastrointestinal conditions including:
- Abdominal pain
- Unintentional weight loss
- Colon cancer prevention
- Gastroesophageal reflux
- Gastrointestinal bleeding
- Hepatitis B and C
- Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), formerly called fatty liver disease
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
- Nausea and vomiting
- Trouble swallowing
Dr. Kozam has performed thousands of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures such as esophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy. He is skilled in a range of options for obtaining biopsies, controlling bleeding, removal of polyps, and management of strictures.
Dr. Kozam has been recognized by President Bill Clinton for his care of veterans at the Washington VA Medical Center and Washingtonian magazine has listed him as a top gastroenterologist in the Washington region.
He earned his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama and completed his residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. Dr. Kozam completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
Over the years, he has served in many roles within MedStar Health and continues to lead at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center as physician chair of Pharmacy and Therapeutics, as well as the Quality, Safety, and Professional Affairs Committee.
When caring for patients, he focuses on building caring, collaborative relationships by learning about their goals, judiciously using diagnostic tests such as endoscopic procedures, and providing information so that they can better understand their conditions. He strives to empower them to advance their gastrointestinal wellness through diet, lifestyle, and medications, and collaboration with other specialists.
