About me

Ramzi Alami, MD, FACS, FASMBS, is a board-certified general surgeon specializing in bariatric surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. While Dr. Alami has a special focus on weight-loss surgery, he also performs a wide range of digestive system surgeries, including those for the appendix, small intestine, stomach, colon, gallbladder, and hernias.

Dr. Alami is a leading expert in treating obesity and other weight-related issues using minimally invasive procedures, which result in less pain and faster recovery times. Most of his procedures are performed using laparoscopic or robotic techniques, including Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and complex single-incision procedures like sleeve gastrectomy. His clinical interests include gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), obesity, and obesity-related metabolic conditions, while his research has explored the impact of obesity on overall health and its relationship to cancer.

Dr. Alami brings extensive expertise in metabolic and bariatric surgery to MedStar Health, having served as Director of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Unit and the Center for Digestive Disease and Weight Management at Calvert Health Medical Center, where he developed a comprehensive bariatric surgery program. His leadership at Calvert was recognized with the Outstanding Medical Leadership Award. He also brings extensive experience in surgical education and mentorship, having held several academic and leadership positions at the American University of Beirut Medical Center, including Associate Professor, Associate Program Director, and Director of the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Unit. In 2025, The Daily Record named him Physician of the Year at its annual Health Care Heroes Awards.

He completed his medical training and internship at the American University of Beirut, followed by an additional internship and residency at Virginia Commonwealth University, and then a fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at Stanford University. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Outside the operating room, Dr. Alami enjoys skiing and spending time outdoors. He is a native speaker of Arabic and English and conversational in French.

Philosophy of Care

“Personal, individualized care is at the core of my practice. My patients can always count on my complete and full attention. I love connecting with my patients and getting to know them beyond their diagnosis or surgical needs. Being told you need surgery is stressful, so my job is to provide reassurance and ease throughout the entire journey, from the initial consult to the operating room, and finally, to recovery.”
